Diffusor slide for Gossen Pilot light meter

Charles Clemens , Nov 14, 2001; 01:17 p.m.

This is not a question; but rather some (I hope) helpfull information. The Gossen Pilot and Pilot 2 (also known in Europe as the "Sixtino 2") are wonderful incident meters. As they age about the first thing to fail seems to be the white plastic sliding diffusor screen one uses to switch between incident and reflected modes. It cracks or splits at it's joints. These can be ordered from Gossen/Bogen parts department at 201-818-9500 for a mere $2.00 each (plus $5.00 S&H) and are easy to self install.

I have discovered however that these replacement slides do not fit the older "Pilot" model.

I did discover, in the investigation, that removing the back of the older Pilot to clean the innards or attempt a screen replacement is not intuitive.

One observes what appear to be 2 little plugs filling the holes within which the body screws should be. These are merely thin flat metal discs loosely glued like little manhole covers over the tunnels to the screws. Pop them out with the tip of a scalpel blade or similar. Then, you can unscrew the screws hidden beneath; and open the body of the meter.

Thanks so much for posting this information. I have a Gossen Pilot. It was given to me and I had no clue how it worked your posting has helped me greatly. I only have one question two actually. 1. What do the E and the V mean on the meter?( Maybe yours dosent have these. It was hard to tell in the manual photo. 2. Once the needles are lined up Im assuming that I can use any of the combinations that are lined up on the meter, is this right?

I noticed that the above post didn't come in as HTML. Here is a better looking version.

The "E and V" stand for E/V, the abbreviation for "Exposure Value". E/V is another way of expressing the relationship of shutter speed and lens opening (F-Stop) that yield correct exposure.
