Nikon speedlight on Canon camera?

"The only stupid question is the one you dont' ask"--so here goes. Is it a bad idea or impossible to use a Nikon Speedlight SB-25 on a Canon EOS Rebel camera? [Intention: to save money.]

It will work fine in non-TTL Auto and Manual modes, but obviously not in TTL mode. To be 100% safe it would probably be smart to cover all of the flash contacts on the Rebel hotshoe with tape except for the large center contact.
