Practical Advice

for visiting Berlin/Prague by Philip Greenspun

The last time I was in either city was 1993. I stayed with my friends in Berlin and in an apartment I found through the railway station tourist office in Prague. Consequently, I can't give you any hot tips.

However, I can say that you absolutely must buy the Cadogan Prague guidebook from amazon.com and/or the Cadogan Berlin guidebook if you want to get the most out these cities.

Make sure you book accommodation in Prague. We went mid-winter assuming the hostels would be quiet, and spent 3 hours phoning hostels looking for a bed. Also, if you can, stay in the old city - most of the hostels are a trip on the undergound away - and this can be inconvenient if you are staying out late in the beerhalls or a concert.

Don't miss the 'Bone Church' in Kutna Hora (an hour east of Prague by train). It's something you'll never see in The States.
