Go on... convince me to get the 50mm f1.4 and ditch the f1.8

Jamie Robertson , Jul 30, 2009; 07:42 a.m.

I have the 5D2 and I love my 50mm f1.8. I've had this 50mm lens for years and it's great (as I am sure you already know.)

I have a few hundred quid burning a hole in my pocket so convince me to buy the 50mm f1.4.

I already know the advantages of the f1.4... 8 aperture blades for better bokeh, better build, better AF.

This is a bit of a stupid post... I am bored sitting here at work but let's have some fun. Tell me more reasons to get the f1.4, some that I may not have considered. Or should I forget the idea and stick with the nifty fifty?

If you can't think of any reasons just tell me a good joke instead.

Jamie, I don't know about the f/1.8 version, but the f/1.4 is one absolutely fantastic lens. The image quality on my 5D Mk II is superb. I'd say, go for it!

Any review I've read that goes into technical image analysis doesn't rate the 1.4 much above the 1.8 for IQ, the other valid points you made aside.
If your 1.8 is still working away why change it?
If you have £300 burning a hole in your pocket then you could augment or expand your kit with something lovely like an 85mm f1.8 or a Sigma 105mm f2.8 macro. Both fine lenses that would increase your overall scope.
If you already have these lenses or no need for them, what about the BG for the 5DM2? The grips really transform the handling in portrait mode, or do you need a flash? You can get the 580 Mk2 with a Cf memory card from Tesco.com for £350?

Don't neglect the Sigma 50/1.4. I sold my Canon 1.4 for it and haven't looked back.

Yes, if you have the time to dork around with finding a copy that will focus the Sigma is certainly a lens to consider.

Everyone raves about the bokeh and image quality.

I had the EF 50 1.8 and now have the EF 50 1.4

The 1.4 is soft til around f/2.2 but is still usefull wide open. It is in dire need of an upgrade due to the old micro motor usm design. You already know all this I'm sure.

I usually don't even consider third party glass but I'd look into the sigma considering you already have the plastic fantastic.

Irish Petrol Station

A petrol station owner in Dublin was trying to increase his sales, so he put up a sign that read, 'Free Sex with Fill-Up.'

Paddy pulled in, filled his tank and asked for his free sex.
The owner told him to pick a number from 1 to 10.

If he guessed correctly, he would get his free sex.

Paddy guessed 8, and the proprietor said, 'You were close.
The number was 7. Sorry. No sex this time.'

A week later, Paddy, along with his friend Mick, pulled in for another fill-up. Again he asked for his free sex.

The proprietor again gave him the same story, and asked him to guess the correct number.
Paddy guessed 2. The proprietor said, 'Sorry, it was 3.
You were close, but no free sex this time.'

As they were driving away, Mick said to Paddy,
'I think that game is rigged and he doesn't really
Give away free sex at all.'

Paddy replied, 'No it's genuine enough Mick.

My wife won twice last week.'

I own the original 5D....for reference...

The 1.4 is faster...a lot?, nope...but if you do night photography a lot, it's a god send.

The bokeh...and believe me, I'm not a bokeh freak or anything...is sooooooooooooo much better than the 1.8. I didn't even think about that when I bought it....but noticed it immediately.

And the reason I bought it....again low light...the 1.8 was driving me crazy with focus hunting in lower light level conditions. The 1.4 ain't the best on the market, but it's 100% better than the 1.8

Q1: What's brown and sticky?
Q2: What's brown and rings like a bell?

I have none of the above, but if I get one it would be the Sigma 50mm f/1.4. I've see the bokeh comparisons that that lens looks outstanding. They say many samples have focus problems but I'd probably use it in places where I would tweak the focus anyway, and it has FTM.

A1: A stick!
A2: Duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuung.
