Tethered shooting

William Scott , Nov 20, 2009; 06:08 p.m.

Hi

I want to use my Canon 5D to shoot tethered to a laptop. The wireless option is way too much money for me just now and so I will end up using a USB cable (or maybe firewire ). I'm not sure how long I can extend this cable though. I heard 12 feet was the max and this doesn't seem very much. I have also heard that some people use much longer cables successfully.
Can anyone who has used this technique advise me please?

Thanks very much

William

the IEEE specification for usb cable is 5 meters..or around 16 ft... so unless you got a repeater you will be bound to this limit.

Thanks Mark. Please will you excuse my ignorance, what is a repeater?
Also does this limit apply to USB or can I go longer with that?
Thanks

Thanks for the link Dave. I have heard of and used google before and checked that out for myself but noticed it only showed repeater cable. I wasn't sure if this was cable to be used for in conjunction with a repeater or not, or if it would work with my laptop or not, or if there were any other issues. I suppose I was hoping for some reply which might tell me this and also if there were any issues on running my partircular set up and how best to use it. I didn't ask all these questions specifically because I have found people are generally helpful and tend to include them in their answers. I am stil hoping. But as I say thanks ever so much

From Monoprice.com:
(link)

33FT 10M USB 2.0/1.0 Active EXTENSION / Repeater CABLE A Male to A Female
This 33ft USB 2.0 Active Extension cable bursts beyond the 15ft range limit of standard USB cables. You no longer need to limit device placement due to the range limitations of short cables. This cable has a built in active repeater that assures signal integrity with no degredation.

I have this cable and it works perfectly. Less than US$10. Just add a regular USB cable to the active extension cable to get whatever connector end you need (mini USB, male USB, etc).

Monoprice is where all the cool guys and gals shop for their cable needs.

Well thanks Jim. I realise you are pleased with your company's products. Unfortunately I am in the UK and could probably buy similar here without huge shipping costs. Anyway, so that I can compare what you have with what I would buy can you tell me that this sort of thing would work with a laptop up to 10m without any other additions?

Thanks

William

It's not my company, William. I don't care where you shop. It's just a suggestion with an attempt at humor. Do some research on the Monoprice website at the link I posted. There are many customer reviews that should answer all your questions.

Jim
