75-300mm 1:4-5.6 III USM Lens Problem

Jacquelyn Gomez , Sep 09, 2010; 05:08 p.m.

Yesterday I was using my Canon Ultrasonic 75-300 mm 1:4-5.6 III USM lens to shoot a Cross Country running event. I was using the Al Servio focus when the lens froze up and quit working.
I tried the lens again today, and it still will not focus. This happened a couple of weeks ago, and it started working when I used it at home later. Has anyone else had this type of problem? If so, do you have any suggestions?

Carefully clean the electrical contacts on the lens and lens mount. Rub them with a microfiber cloth.

It's the flexible cable inside the lens that broke. The only way to repair it is to send it to canon. This is a common problem on all lenses. My 24-105L had it's flexi cable broke too. It took 3 weeks for canon to repair and cost about $115-, Just to give you an idea.

A broken internal cable could possibly start by giving an intermittent fault, but there is at least some chance that the problem is caused by dirty contacts. Sadly, if the lens does need repair, you may well find that it is not economic to have it fixed, or even that Canon will decline to fix it, and you should look at the cost and benefit of various replacement options before spending what may well be quite significant money on it.
