canon lens made in USA?

Scott Frindel Cole , Jan 28, 2012; 12:43 a.m.

Hi,
There's a local c-list ad saying that his Canon 85 1.2 L is made in USA, not Japan. Can this possibly be true, or just total BS?

Sounds like BS to me. I've never heard of Canon USA doing its own manufacturing. And the whole tone of that ad, plus the use of stock images for the lens, makes me question whether it's on the level. It could be one of those "invitation to a robbery" things where you bring the cash and the other guy just brings a weapon. Whenever I've sold anything on craigslist or eBay, I've posted my own photos of the actual item.

Total BS. There are no Canon manufacturing or assembly plants in the USA.

The USA lens that says "Made in Japan" near the filter ring?

'"Made it to the USA" is probably more appropriate.

The seller is probably confused over USA vs Grey Market versions. I wouldn't judge him/her for it.

It's not just that the seller is mistaken about it being made in the US because he(?) goes on to say "which runs at a higher price than the Japan model". Smells scammy to me. Besides, I don't trust anyone who uses that many exclamation marks in the description.

(Nice catch, Stephen ;-) )

I'm with Phil B on this one. There are quite a few consumers that have a fairy tale belief that a "Canon USA" or a "Nikon USA" lens/camera is made specifically for the USA market with better materials, to higher standards with better QC, on different assembly lines with more qualified workers, and other such nonsense. This is probably simply a case of owner ignorance. To be followed by a case of CL buyer ignorance eventually I expect. :)

It looks to me me as if the seller has looked at the USM label and thought it means US Made instead of UltraSonic Motor.

the guy seems to think that USM thats written on his lens means "united states made" !
