What's in your camera bag?
Kevin Swan , Jul 12, 2008; 04:44 p.m.
I always get a kick out of seeing how other photographers organize their camera bags, and I've never really been
satisfied with my own configuration. Here's a picture of my own camera bag, and a link to a Flickr image with notes highlighting
each item (I hope linking to Flickr is OK - if not, please delete with my apologies).
Anyone else willing to post the contents of their own camera bag?

For newspaper work i carry a Nikon D200 with the 17-55/2.8 attached, a 70-20 AF-S VR, the 10.5 Fisheye, a Sigma 10-20,
two SB-800, a SU-800, a 50/1.4 or a Sigma 30/1.4 and a Ricoh GX-100 in a Billingham 550 (add some batteries, tabletop-
tripods, cables, filters and a lot of other stuff to get an idea of my masochistic nature). I also use Tenba-bags from time to
time but the Billingham is the best bag i have ever used. A couple of Metz-handlemount-flashes with Pocket-Wizards and
other lighting tools is in a second bag in my car. Sometimes i carry only a Nikon with tele and the Ricoh GX-100 or a Nikon
8400. Cheers, georgs.

I just went to Cape May for a few days. I had intended to shoot mostly with a Canon F-1. The problem was that I had Fuji NPZ in one of my F-1 bodies and I didn't have time to get my other F-1 out. I put a black Nikkormat FT2 in a separate napsack with a 28/3.5 AI, a 50/1.4 S (pointy prong) and a 135/2.8 'K' lens. The idea was that I would use the Nikkormat at the beach. What was in the regular camera bag? A Canon F-1 with the standard prism finder and LD focsing screen. Lenses were a 28/2 FD SSC, 35/2 FD SSC (first version), 50/1.8 FD SSC, 135/2.8 Vivitar Close Focusing and 200/2.8 New FD (1st version). I forgot to take a 2X. I also had a Vivitar 252 flash and a Flash Coupler L. I wound up shooting four rolls of print film and one roll of EBX. If I had been thinking more quickly I would have taken an extra Canon body instead of the Nikkormat and the three Nikkors but I had fun using both systems and on Monday I will get three rolls of the print film back. the EBX will come back from Dwayne's in the usual time. In three days in the Cape May area I think I only saw one other person using a film camera.

Now I remember that I also had a 50/3.5 New FD in the bag. Carrying all of this up to the top of the light house really gave me a workout. I counted all 199 steps on the way down.

With the D2H:
Midrange zoom attached to the camera.
50/1.8
Pocket lint.
Another small prime, varies depending on what I anticipate. Sometimes a 55/3.5 macro. If the midrange zoom is the slowpoke 18-70, I might pack something to compensate for the speed, either a 24/2.5 Tamron or 85/2 AI-S. Or the Spiratone Portragon.
SB-800 with pop-on diffuser dome. I don't usually tote the entire pouch with filters, etc.
Spare EN-EL4, AA's, CF card, caps, pens, cleaning cloth, etc.
No tea.
Protective filters for photographing small kids, pets, in adverse weather (lotta gritty wind blowing in Texas, as well as sap dripping from trees). Easier to clean a filter than the lens.
Those laminated cheat sheets for the D2H and SB-800.
Ibuprofen, Benadryl, eye drops, Atomic Fireballs and Lemonheads.
A dozen small prints of typical stuff I shoot to disabuse the officious of the notion that I am a terrorist or pervert.
A random cognitive dissonance generator to confirm their suspicions that I might still be a bit off.

In my main bag yesterday was a Canon 1vHS with 70-200 f/2.8IS, a 10D with 17-40 f/4L, a PowerShot A720IS for digital grab-shots, a 550EX flash, and a couple of older rangefinders--a Fujica Compact Deluxe and a Minolta AL. In my 2nd bag are two Nikon FEs, one with an MD-12 motordrive and a Nikkor 35-135 f/3.5-4.5 and the other with a Nikkor 50 f/1.8. In my 3rd, small 'vintage' bag are a Kodak Retina Reflex III with a Schneider-Kreuznach Retina Xenon 50mm f/1.9 and an Agfaflex IV with an f/4 135mm Agfa Color Telinear, plus a Voigtlander Vito II. Bag #1 is a Tamrac Pro12, bag #2 is, ironically, a Canon bag (no wonder there's static electricity in it!), and bag #3 is a very old cowhide camera bag that I got with the Kodak Retina Reflex some time ago.

I must say I am surprised by the relatively high number of people who have responded with film cameras. I walk around
with a Domke 801 and will typically carry a combination of:
1. Canon EOS 3: 17-40L, 85/1.8 (Rarely the 24-105 or a Sigma 70-300)
2. Canon A710
3. Nikon FM2: 24/2; 50/1.8; 105/2.5
4. Yashica P&S 24-70.
One day I'll surely add a DSLR body to the mix.

I only have a Lowepro Photo Runner (belt / sholder bag).
If I travel, std daypack with a D70, Sigma 10-20, Nikon 18-200vr, polariser and a ND filter (solid). Tripod in bag hidden. Casually - Lowepro Photo Runner, with above without the tripod. If I go out at my home city - D70, Sigma Sigma 10-20, Nikon 80-200/2.8 AFD and just my std daypack, tripod hand carried.
I intend to get the Lowepro Primus thou .. I hardly use flash. Most times its 2 zooms or 3 or 4 primes. If I travel for a few days in the past I took one battery only without the charger, I intend to carry a few batteries for a 3 week trip and try to wing it without it too ... I also am not a high volume shooter.

Just back from a Singapore and Paris trip and took a setup that absolutely delighted me (remembering of course that I am an amateur and relative newbie).
Tamrac Express Pack 8 - in my mind the ultimate small carry-on bag for light camera setup and travel items, also great for city strolling
Velbon Ultra Luxi tripod with QD51Q ballhead - attached to side of pack with custom-sewn quick release elastic straps
Nikon D80
Nikkor 35/2 and Nikkor 85/1.4 prime lenses (35 mounted ~75% of time), lens hood for 85 lens
SB400 flash (used very rarely, almost only for fill) and matching sto-fen diffuser
UV filter onboard each lens, circular polariser carried for each, 3x4GB Lexar cards, cable release, remote control release, spare charged batteries for camera and lenses, lens wipes
In suitcase (not carry around) - chargers, portable storage hard-drive device, sensor cleaner
Am spending a month in Asia starting in August with Olympics and then travels through China and Nepal on the agenda. Am planning to exactly replicate this kit, with the one addition of my 18-200VR for general daylight use and reach. I also have 70-210 and 50/1.4 at home and 80-200 on long-term loan to a friend, but cannot justify taking any of these - after my recent trip the benefits of light weight far outdo the added choices that any of these would give me.

BAG - from the dictionary . . . not to split f stops.

Heh. Mark, I haven't seen a better organized on the go, cash and carry photo system since the old days in Mexico when a guy would take your photo, develop it on the spot and hand you the print within minutes - no Polaroids.
All you need now is a push handle, umbrella, colorful decals and musical theme played over a tiny speaker.
For those who haven't already checked him out, Mark is a sports photographer who has mastered the business end of making it work. I can take photos as well as the next guy but his business model and organizational skills make me dizzy.
john robison , Jul 15, 2008; 12:58 a.m.
What bag? If the weather permits it's a cheap vest with a few big pockets. Standard kit: Olympus Pen f, 20mm f3.5, 38mm f1.8 and 100mm f3.5 Zuikos, Vivitar 2X, 43mm yellow filter, few rolls of Tri-X, Sekonic L-28c. If its too hot for the vest (75 degrees for me, I don't do heat) then I stuff the stuff in a bag. This is the kit I grab the most. If I want to be real light then its a Pen S 3.5 and eyeball exposure. If I want a bigger neg I have OM stuff. Bigger still? Mamiya C220 and some lenses and prism finder. The Mamiya needs a tripod for sure and I have a gitzo that should be in a museum (or scrap yard). Every once in a while I get real weird and just slip a Mamiya 16 or Minolta 16II in a pocket. For the past 10 days I had a Olympus E300 but its going back to KEH tomorrow, bad sensor. Someday I'd like to learn to really see, and stop taking crappy pictures.

My times of using a huge camera bag with SLR equipment are over. I now mainly use rangefinder cameras and lenses, and even the smallest camera bag is large enough for one camera and three lenses. It is a great relief, and it allows me to nearly forget about having a camera bag to haul around.
Guillaume Martin , Jul 15, 2008; 11:06 a.m.
Well lets see.....
Bag 1: Lowepro Commercial with Hasselblad, 3 lenses, spare film backs and light meter, rolls of 120 film B&W and Tranny.
Bag 2: Lowepro Slingshot with 2x AE-1 Programs, 3 lenses and filters, rolls of 35mm film B&W and Tranny.
Bag 3: Eagle something or other with Nikon D200, D50, 2 lenses, flash, lots of batteries, chargers and bits.

Raid,
I *never* haul my camera bag around, it sits in my closet. I go out with one lens and one camera body, maybe a second body and lens if I need it (usually a film camera along with my digital), but most of the time I do not. The last time I hauled a camera bag with me was when I was shooting weddings, and that was many many years ago.
Plus, it's stupid to haul or carry a camera bag. That bag says "HELLO! There are expensive things in here, please steal me!"
When I need to haul gear in a bag, it is in a normal bag, not any kind of camera bag.

I've heard women can be like this when they talk about their purses too!
Now...what i'd really like to talk about camera straps...do you boys like the nice thin ones ...or the big chunky butch type?

The short answer is "it depends" :)
But a somewhat usual set might be something like 10-22mm, 17-40mm f/4L, 50mm f/1.4, 85mm f/1.2L, 70-300 DO, 200mm f/2.8L, a polarizer, Cokin grad ND filter + holder for 77mm, cable release, a couple of memory cards, a lenspen, plus the camera body itself. While going on vacations etc, one or more 'redundant' lenses will stay home. Haven't had any theft attempts so far, I guess I'm ugly enough to scare potential thieves.

I have two bags,
1. LowePro Slinghot 100.
2. Kata dr - 467
The slinghot is for quick trips, going down to town, nipping round a friends... anything where I wouldnt be planning to shoot anything, But obviously theres always a chance.
With it being such a small bag, I usually take my d300, and a good all round lens, used to be a sigma 28-200, but more recently a Nikon 18-200.
And if i'm going to be out long, I can then fit in a decent top-flash, spare battery for cam & flash, mabye a longer 300mm lens, and obviously a few memory cards.
With the Kata 467, This is much more my work bag, If i'm intentionally going somewhere for a shoot, then The 467 is great due to the shear ammount of stuff I can get into it comfortably,
tomorrow I have a publicity shoot at a local bowling alley, and my bag set-up is pretty much the usual..........
- Nikon d300, with nikon 18-200 lens attached.
- Sigma 28-200 & 70-300 Lens's.
- Compact spotting scope with T attachments
- Laptop with charger, cf card reader, bluetooth mouse
- mini Portable printer, with spare ink cartridge and a few packs of 6x4 paper
- Topflash with spare batt's
- charger & spare batt for d300
- 3x 2gb cf & 1x 4gb CF (memory cards)
- pens, notebook, a ton of business cards
- manfrodo monopod
It all fits in well leaving just enough space for a can of coke or something,
Usually I wouldnt always have the printer & scope which gives me lots of space for lunch, a jacket, or any other extras I need to have on location

My bag is top loading, so its hard to show how it is organized. Its a lowepro Nova 2 AW. Depending on where I am going and what I am doing I carry (left to right with 3 inserts)
Vivitar 70-210/3.5 series 1, Tamron 28/2.5 and Oly OM-1n with Tamron 35-70/3.5 attached, Sigma 24/2.8 and Zuiko 50/1.4. The zip liner on the top of the flap holds a shower cap and a large ziplock freezer bag and wide angle adaptor for my flash. The front pocket contains a 49mm polarizer, 58mm polarizer, 49mm len hood, 8" cable release a couple of spare zinc-air batteries and a few film canisters. That is my general kit.
If I am doing more indoor type stuff I'll change out my Vivitar 70-210/3.5 for my Vivitar 285hv and a set of spare batteries.
For city vacations (Europe, New York, etc) I'll change out my Tamron 28/2.5 for my Sigma 28/1.8 for the extra light gathering.
I don't have room in my bag for it, but I'll sometimes take my Vivitar 300/5.6, Sigma 400/5.6 or vivitar 2x teleconverter if I think there might be an opportunity for wildlife shooting. I'll just shot those in to a backpack which I carry my camera bag inside of as well.

When PJ and I travel to Europe for five weeks the bag will contain 2 Canon DSLR bodies (5D and 20D), EF 17-40mm
f/4L USM, EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM, TS-E 24mm f/3.5L, EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM, with 72mm and 77mm filter
packages (circular polarizers, .6 and .9 ND) with good neutral glass on each lens. Also in the bag, two remote cords, four
extra batteries, a dozen CF cards (2GB+). A side pocket holds lens cleaning equipment, a small pocket flash, screwdriver
kit, glasses holders, connection cables, etc. We live out of that Lowell Pro shoulder bag!

DON'T LAUGH TOO HARD!
I've watched this forum for some time and realize that the judge of a good photographer is his/her equipment. Just for
good a laugh, I decided to empty my camera bag. But I'm not going to yeild to peer pressure--this setup suits me
just fine: (1) Nikon D80 with Nikon 70-300 mm lens (for sports); (2) Nikon 85mm f/1.8 lens (for low light sideline); (3)
camera handbook (just in case I get stumped); (4) lens cleaning equipment: blower (LOL!), brush, lent-free cloth; (5)
spare battery and image cards; (6) website cards (parents always forget where to find the photos); (7) medical stuff -
Bandaids, Benedryl, Gavescon, Imodium, and Kleenex (the mom in me won't let me leave home without them and,
YES, they always come in handy). BTW, I stole the backpack from my son. It suits me well while I'm traipsing the
sideline. I know, I know, you need some Kleenex now!

I'm not laughing Laura, only we women can properly pack a bag, having had the practise of carrying purses around all our lives! ;-)
Let's see...start with the old beat-up Black's generic bag that someone gave me when he got tired of seeing me with the even more beat-up old generic camera bag I had before. Camera is the Canon Rebel XT, sometimes accompanied by the Elph digital. Lenses are the cheapie kit lens that came with the Rebel, plus the 100mm Canon macro and the 70-300 DO IS zoom lens.
Brace yerselves guys...I have the MANUAL in the bag! And even refer to it sometimes in the field!
(Pause for a moment as we hear the audible gasps)
Other Stuff: A linen dishtowel, notebook and pen, cleaning stuff (papers, bulb dust blower), bird call, ziplock bag containing an assortment of elastic bands, twist-ties and clothespins (holds back grasses, branches, etc.), gold-foil sided card from a chocolate bar and a couple pieces of gold-coloured foil from coffee bags (reflectors), matches, Swiss army knife with an assortment of gadgets, one of those folding plier-thingies with an assortment of tools/gadgets, pocket-sized emergency poncho, 3 big plastic garbage bags, a comb (one must tidy up when coming across male photographers out in the middle of nowhere) tiny bottle of Muskol in a ziploc, couple of diet bars (the kind that tastes like chocolate-covered sawdust and last for a century, one never knows when one might actually get hungry enough to eat it), spare batteries and memory cards, fish knife, (probably landed in there during one of my fishing/photo trips down the lake), sometimes the cellphone and mini-first-aid kit,
As for camera straps: Give me the big honkin' wide straps, the thin ones cut into my neck and give me a headache. Same with vests, have yet to find one tha doesn't cut into my neck when loaded down.
Alan MacKay , Jul 21, 2008; 09:06 a.m.
Got a dual compartment Tamrac ( 7 I think...)
Main compartment holds:
Canon 5D, 75-300 IS Lens, 28-105 Lens, 17-35 Lens, 100mm Macro, Sunpak AF 5000 Flash,
Filters, Lots of Batteries and CF Memories Cards, remote trigger, cleaning gear...
Top (secondary) compartment: Battery charger and power lead, Card reader,
Jacket and gloves (when it's cold) snack bars (mine taste better than chocolate covered sawdust, Rose-Marie, though only just) note book, pen/pencil, stuff...
Give me wide camera straps too!
Ceci Wong , Jul 21, 2008; 03:37 p.m.
My Bags:
1 Lowepro Fastpack 250 for long and out-of-town trips;
1 small, very beat up, ugly, generic green canvas shoulder-bag (inserts inside) for walking around the Los
Angeles area
My Stuff:
Nikon D50,
Nikkor AF 18-70mm DX,
Nikkor AF 50mm f/1.8D (my fav),
Micro-Nikkor 60mm f/2.8,
Nikon AF-D 70-210mm f/4-5.6,
Canon SD1000 (a point-and-shoot),
cleaning kit, first-aid kit, swiss army knife, USB cord, battery chargers, extra SD cards, kleenex, small hand
towel, travel-size packet of Wet Ones.
The Lowepro holds *everything* comfortably, but it looks a tad large on my 5'2" frame. The ugly green bag
usually holds the D50, the 18-70, and the Nifty-Fifty.
Keith Selmes , Jul 21, 2008; 03:41 p.m.
The bag doesn't get used very often, but, in the bag ... mpp, helier 15cm, apo tessar 30cm, no name Petzval
the heavy bag
Keith Selmes , Jul 21, 2008; 03:51 p.m.
But I normally use a belt and a DSLR - keeps some weight off the backbone, has everything to hand, allows for carrying a lunchbag or rucksack separately as required. The army surplus pouch is exactly right for Cokin P filters and a compass. Not so good in town or indoors, bur very good out in the country.
rough and ready for hill country

Juanjo, what camera bag is that in you are using (shown above)? It seems it's what I need. Thanks
Mark Scully , Aug 05, 2008; 01:18 p.m.
Actually, Jon, a foam filled an plastic storage case....and rather large. I don't carry much more than a body, flash and lense or two anywhere I go.

Quite a reasonable amount of the time I just throw my 400D plus 50/18 into a plastic bag and put that into the "family" bag that contains drinks for the kids, facewipes and the map of the amusement park...
Every now and then I'll take my personal small backpack and only bring the 400D and my 70-200/4 IS.
Only once in a while I will bring "everything", meaning 4 lenses (18-200, 50, 70-200 and 500mm mirror), the x2 that came with the mirror plus some extra memory. And that's it.
