Masters of digital BW

J Sevigny , Jan 19, 2012; 10:45 a.m.

Here's a question for the peanut gallery.
Who are the contemporary masters of digital black and white photography, converted from color?
I'm proposing a workshop for a university and wanted to get some suggestions for "authors" we might look at.
Best.
John

I do not know of one. I have never even seen a digital print being displayed in the local Museum or Galleries in the Monterey, Ca area.

Dan Burkholder is well-known for his black and white digital printing, as is John Paul Caponigro.

The Monterey Museum of Art has had digital photography in its exhibits - I saw the Aperture 50 Year Anniversary show there, which had quite a few digital prints.

Well I am glad they showed something. I used to go out there and stop in Camera West and visit a gallery or two and I would stop into the Museum if I knew of something I wanted to see. Monterey kind of fell out of my habits with Camera West gone but I still go there for lunch once in a while or the movies at the Del Monte. However I do not know of any prominent digital shooters myself. Possibly the Padre Hills Camera club has somebody that is quite good but I am not sure.

I really like Brad and Travis' work here, well Brad is here at least. I like Kerik Kouklis' work, some of his stuff is a hybrid of digital and collodion, platinum, and wet plate.

Check my favorites, most of it is digital black and white. Some of which would be awe inspiring when and if printed big. The Euro horse photographer's stuff, as one example.

You might want to check out Harold Davis' work and books. He is also a member and contributor here on PN. Although he is not exclusively a B&W photographer, his work in this field is impressive.

Ross-- out of my curiosity/ignorance, how would you know they were digital? (I'm assuming you mean a photo taken on a digital camera as opposed to film.)

Museums and Galleries around here anyway include information on the Print, Photographer and method. To be fair also I will only pay the admission price to a Museum to view the work of certain people such as Adams, Westor or what have you. The Masters is all I am really interested in seeing. If they had a digital exhibition I would not buy a ticket to look at it. The galleries have pictures for sale and you just look at what they have but the information on the picture is right there. Monterey shows pretty much Film pictures from optical printing methods. As pointed out above there are exceptions apparently. I guess the last thing is I browse around places like that maybe twice a year is all. I am usually busy with work and family. Also I am working hard on my Golf game as I want to compete in the US Senior Amateur in 2013 and I need to fix some things in my game. It's going to be time consuming and I plan to spend a few hours at the range today.

I did take some photos this morning of my brand new Grand daughter. I am finally a Grand Pa. I took my D200 with me and it showed it's inactivity as the flash would not work until I cleaned the contacts on the camera. I guess I will use it more often just to keep it going. Usually I take the F100 but I know the kids would want to see the photos right away and my film shots sometimes takes about 2 months before I can make the drive to a lab.
Luella is a beautiful 9lb 3oz girl with wavy hair. I think I am going to call her "El" for a while and see if that sticks. However her Pa starting calling her LuLu so we shall see what it becomes. I gave them $500.00 to open an account for her college. Kind of a starter thing but I will make monthly contributions. With my kids it has run about $100,000 for a BS degree including housing, internet, food, car and tuition. But i saved it up so it's been fine. Not that anybody would care but I am kind of stoked right now.

Totally cool. I doubt if I could tell a silver print made from a digital file, versus a silver print from an optical enlargement. I think I could tell a silver print from lightjet or inkjet, four times out of five, anyway.

Congratulations on the new grandkid. I don't have any yet myself. Education is a ferocious blow to the parental pocketbook, but it's worth it in the end. My kids were the most important thing I did in life.
