The older I get, the better I was

Richard John Edwards , Jan 24, 2012; 05:53 a.m.

I think this statement is true in a lot of aspects of my life, except for the arts, the smarts and the ability to love. But with photography I think with age and experience we get better, Do you all feel the same or do some of you feel that as you get older your photography diminishes for whatever reason.

It's a mixed blessing. On the one hand, I think my photography skills have improved (should I say, matured?) over the years. On the other hand, my motivation for getting up at the crack of dawn for that spectacular sunrise shot, or hiking 10 miles in to those breathtaking falls, has somewhat faded...

Its the opposite for me (although, a few less miles might be nice).

I definitely can't carry as many C-stands out of the truck in one go as I would have been able to when I was 20. But the difference is that now I know why I should carry the right number of stands. Youth is indeed wasted on the young, but having a clue about your purpose isn't something I'd give up in order to have more wind while schlepping equipment. That's what young, clueless assistants are for!

Amen to that! I may not be shooting better, but I'm shooting wiser!

I'm trying to think of something that has improved with age.

Do you think that you can estimate the age of a photographer by looking at his or her work?
Or put another way, could you look at a photographer's work and state which images he or she made when they were young, and which images they had made when they were in their 50's or 60's?

Old saying...
We grow too soon old and too late smart..
I'm not sure I've got th smart part right.. (;o)

I've discovered a very perverse aspect of life: when you retire and your income goes down (sometimes quite dramatically), new photographic equipment gets better and better as well as more and more expensive.

How many 20 somethings visit this site regularly ? On the other hand you have these kids that grew up with Photoshop that will simply amaze you.
