John Golden , Jul 04, 2010; 05:21 p.m.

Hi all, a friends child had her first communion today, He asked me if i would take a few pictures of her before the event, i told him it would be an honor, he said we couldnt do it inside the church so we took some outside, as a surprise for him im going to do an 11x14 fiber base print and have it framed. shot with an RB67 127mm, lighting was an AB800 w/softbox. havn't got to visit the forum in a while, hope everyone is doing well.

John, In keeping with the philosophy "keep it simple" I'd say you have a winner here. If your friends aren't delighted with this one I'll be most surprised. Looks like it was taken with 'north' light so your strobe & modifier have hit the 'sweet spot', their use is transparent, not obvious, as it should be. You've posed her at a good angle, not too much nor too little. To boot she has a beautiful expression, angelic even (fitting for a 1st communion). Your experience and some good luck combined to give you a superb result. Take it & run! Best, LM.

If they don't like these, then they're ungrateful wretches.

Nice.

John, What a lovely photo, and a beautiful child at such an important occasion. ...and a memorable gift it will be. (It is beautiful - and emotional - but, I want to crop the lower right corner. ...maybe the right side just a little.) Congratulations on this success.

Jack

These have a vintage timeless feel. Beautiful work! I see many old First Communion Photographs which were done by Studio Photographers from the 1880s-1950's. Your shots remind me of the them.

I like the Victoria 2 one better. Its simple and nicely lit. The first one has too much stuff in the BG which is distracting, such as the chair? in the corner and the flowers. Also, her bag is half cut off.

Beautiful work John, but I have to admit, when I first saw the title of your post I thought you meant one of your cameras! Collecting and using classic cameras is truly a religious experience.

I'm sure your friends will treasure this photo in the years to come.

Great work. You made very effective use of the soft lighting. Thanks for sharing.
