Raynette and the Wind

Here's a lens which, to me, is currently a complete mystery. It's the 135mm Raynette Auto Tele f/2.8.

Should anyone have any information regarding Raynette lenses, please post a response. The Raynette brand featured on a couple of quite sophisticated wide-angle lenses, this short tele and a short zoom, all in M42 or Pentax K mount. I can unearth no information regarding it's manufacturer, other than it was made in Japan, and a few hints that Raynette was possibly a Yashica subsidiary, but that may well be one of the self-perpetuating myths so common on the Net. This M42 example hasn't seen much use, and I'm impressed by the appearance and build quality, and the excellent optical performance. With very clear and well-coated glass, silky focusing, the whole lens exudes quality, right down to the nice screw-in lenscap. I'd really like to find out a little more about it.

And the wind? For the last week our slender islands have been washed over by nor-west gales from the ocean, gusting up to 140kph, closing the steep hill highway behind my place and generally making life difficult. This morning the winds had moderated a little, and we were rewarded by what I call a "wind-light", uncannily crisp and clear with deep shadows and brilliant colour, as if all the dust has been washed and shaken from the atmosphere. Very "Kodachrome", if you get my meaning. I took the Raynette out early on a Canon DSLR, and here are a few of the results. I just hope someone out there can provide a little more background on a fine lens.

Rick, according to this page, the US trademark Raynette was filed in 1975 (registration number 1048045) by Yoshida Industry Co. Ltd. of Tokyo for photographic cameras, projectors, lenses, and electronic flash units. The trademark expired in 1997. The logo shown on that page matches the one on your lens cap. Yoshida also held several other trademarks, of which only "Insta-Wide" and "Insta-Tele" (for accessory conversion lenses) are still unexpired. Adorama and B&H both sell Raynox brand Insta-Wide and Insta-Tele lenses, and it looks like the same things are also sold under the Quantaray brand.

See also the English homepage of raynox.co.jp, which identifies itself as Yoshida.
