Lens hood for Vivitar Series 1 70-210mm zoom

Dan B. , Jan 27, 2012; 02:04 p.m.

Does anyone know if the Vivitar Series 1 70-210mm zoom came with a lens hood? I really like this lens (the one I have is in Olympus OM mount) but it gets a lot of flare, especially when used at the shorter focal lengths.

I think the filter thread size is 62mm but what ever it is just buy a telephoto metal lens hood in the correct size from seller 'heavystar' on E-bay. I have purchased several hoods from them and all have been of good quality and reasonable in price. Look on the beauty ring at the front of the lens. There may be a circle with a line through it and a number such as 62 or 67 or 72, that is the filter size in mm for that lens. I believe the telephoto hood is short enough not to cut off the corners at 70mm on your zoom. I had a Vivitar 75~205 f3.8 in a push-pull style for my OM-1 and the telephoto hood I purchased from heavystar did not cut the corners at 75mm.

I would not doubt it originally came with the hood. I have found many hoods on eBay and other places for other Series One lenses like the 35-85mm f2.8, 200mm f3, 90mm f2.5, etc.

Like so many lenses, they (lens and hood) eventually become separated before finding their way onto the second-hand market. Some day you MIGHT stumble across one, but you are probably better served doing what John said.

Thanks, John and Greg. Yes, John, the lens does take a 62mm filter. I'll see what I can find with Heavystar.

If it's the Kiron version (s/n beginning with 22), the instruction manual makes no mention of a lens hood as an included or extra-cost accessory. The Vivitar Series 1 brochures I have also make no mention of an accessory hood for this lens. A scan of the manual is available at the following site:

Of course, you can pick up a generic screw-in hood and test it for effectiveness and vignetting.

Edited: The Kiron version has 67mm filter threads. Threads of 62mm would indicate a later version (Tokina or Komine).

Not too long ago I saw a version which I think was the Kiron version (67mm) for sale at a thrift store with what appeared to be a Vivitar lens hood, which I assumed to be original. Of course it may have been an added cost accessory. I have a vague recollection that it may even have said "Series 1" on it, but did not pay a lot of attention. Next time I'm back that way, if it's still there, I'll check. It's not close to where I live, but I pass by every month or so, and turnover in that department is slow, owing to their optimistic pricing. It was a Nikon mount lens, and I think they wanted 50 bucks for it, a bit more than I'm willing to pay, since I really don't need it.

oops sorry, double post

There have been five different variants of the Vivitar Series 1 70-210mm:

I had the first version back in 1980. There was a lens hood made specifically for the lens- I had one, but can't remember if it came with the lens or was an add-on:

Thanks for the link to the manual, Gordon Yee. Photos on pages 6, 9 and 17 show the lens with a hood but the hood has no markings (at least in the views shown). The hood certainly wasn't included with the lens, as Page 23 of the booklet lists on the lens caps as accessories. Thanks, Matthew Currie, but $50 is way more than I'd want to pay, too.

I have the clamp-on rubber hood, marked 'Vivitar Series 1' and with the model number 31-9740, shown in the picture above. Seems to work well enough but it does have a habit of collapsing when I'm carrying the camera on my shoulder, and it does prevent the use of the slip-on lens cap that came with my lens.
