Canon G10 due soon?

I've just bought a G9 but I'm so scared of it being superceded and losing money
on it that I'm going to sell it and wait for the G10. Hopefully this will come
with the built in Lensmate grip so I won't have to stick anything to it.
Would you all do the same as me?

Totally wrong. Wait for the G12. Rumour has it that it will be controlled by brain waves. But be aware of the G13 which works the other way round, it will control your brain. Maybe we can even conclude that the G9/10 are already controlling your brain. Is brain control in the list of specifications of the G9 or have Canon not mentioned this?
On a more serious note, there will always be a successor to (almost) every camera. You can wait a long time.

Not likely. The G6 was announced in Aug. 2004, the G7 in Sept. 2006, and the G9 (some would say "the G7 w/RAW") was announced in Aug. 2007. So August (or Sept at Photokina) at the earliest (for announcement, which can be long before delivery).
In other words, if you want a camera to use in 2008, probably not worth waiting.

You're already going to lose money by selling it and not returning it (assuming you can). So, basically, you spent $50-100 just for the privilege of experiencing technological supersession fear?

Enjoy what you have. The G9 is a great camera. I've had a G2 for years and it too is a great camera. The big feature that is so great about a G9 is teh ability to get RAW files out. You can chase around on cameras looking for the "best" camera. It doesn't exist and never will, the best camera is the one you have, and the way to make it best is to use it.

Garaunteed that the G10 is near. How do I know? Simple: I just bought a G9.

Very much enjoyed and agree reading Jos Van comment. Just disagree a little bit with "You can wait a long time." Actually, there will always be a new model coming. If you wait for a new model each time, you are chasing a shadow/mirage. And you will wait for EVER.

Heck, I've still got the G3 and the G6. Maybe the G10 will tempt me.

The nice thing is that I have a G7 and guess what I'm missing? RAW !
I'm just as curious about the successor to the G9 as the rest of you.

I thought April 1st was way off - have to check my filofax. Err, he doesn't mean what I think he said, guys, does he?

Uhhhh... sure. Sounds like a good plan...

I solved this (maybe) by ordering an RD-1...APS chip, 14mp, 28mm equivalent, viewfinder... if I'm lucky it'll be shipped by May :-(

Hey, I was only joking but it seems many people hold off buying a camera just in case a better one is just around the corner..
I think only Jos took the spirit of the thread :/

I guess this comes up so often, it's hard to tell if people are joking or not. I have to admit, your scenario was about the most ridiculous I had heard!

I think a G series camera will come out that's controlled by brain waves before Canon figures out that all we really want is the flip screen back again.

"all we really want is the flip screen back again."
And the ir remote and the 2.0 lens, please.
Michael S. , Feb 27, 2008; 09:52 a.m.
And one more thing: please start at 28mm wide.
Very happy to sacrifice a bit of zoom at the long end in return.

28mm is a definate requirement. 24mm would be dream.
Not too fussed personally on lack of flip screen on G9 as it would add bulk and reduce size of screen. I have my A80 for flip screen fun. One thing I do love is the aesthetics of the camera (with the added grip). It could do with a second wheel in front of the shutter release.
You all know Canon will never give you everything in one camera, like leaving RAW out or remote or fast lens or flip screen. They need you to go buy the next model to gain these features back but at the same time they will drop something else to keep you wanting!

I love my G9 which I purchased in March 2008. I bought it via eBay for AU$530 (.94 of US$) inc. spare battery, 2GB card and a screen protector. However, I'm still waiting for an English manual, so had to download .pdf from Canon. The box arrived out of Japan direct to my doorstep. A little bit 'dodgy' I know - but it saved me AU$200 locally.
What I really liked (why I joined Photo.net) was the comment below:

Nice one Jos!
Whatever the next iteration of the G series, STOP the Megapixel madness. Even go back to "10MP" if you have to Canon, but improve the quality of the lens; fix the close-up focus issue - at 'wide' angle I shouldn't have to zoom at all; create a forward facing audio pickup for video capture so the cameraman doesn't sound as loud relative to comments made by the subject.
When I attend or do an interview I need to make photographic and audio record of them. Audio being an extension dimension, another sense of vision - so to speak. "Tone" (message-wise) being 70% of audio communication means audio can be visionary. I'd like to see Canon add more dynamic value to the G series product. Open the market appeal to a wider appreciation of what this great product really is - differentiate this camera in a special way! Keep all the good stuff, plus allow the unit to record audio just like a high quality digital audio recorder. Canon could capture another entire market. All the button controls already exist on this unit for a brilliant digital audio recorder - grow the technology. Multimedia is where it's ALL going.
Do not change the 'stowable' shape or grip of this 'beauty' or add a flick-up screen. The current screen and body shape seem just about perfect! It's the nicest 'compact body' I've handled in years.
P.S. Anyway... pretty soon mobile phones will be rivalling compact camera technology, so get a move on Canon. Include high quality audio capture for starters, include mic/line input, headphone socket for MP3. (Shock horror! MP3?) Pick up the pace, there's plenty of micro space to make this camera an indispensible, robust, quality multimedia device.
Think outside the square Canon, and "G", you won't even have to change the shape. But DON'T change the shape, it's perfectly manageable and compactible as it is. I love my G9 - but I want more!
Regards to all, Peter G (It's my 1st post)

Remember that even before the G10 is launched Canon will be working on the G11 or G12.

My husband has a G9, it takes the nicest, crispest, clearest best colour photos I have seen. Don't even think about making money on a camera, didn't you buy it to take photos?
Paul Marbs

Susan, nicest, crispest, clearest best colour photos you have seen?
You should try a 5D with a prime.. then you'll see a difference.
Susan Hogarth , May 01, 2008; 05:48 a.m.
Paul why would you want a G9 or 10 if you have a 5D?

G9 is a camera I can carry in my jacket pocket. Different camera for different situations.

I had the g4 and now the G9
I miss the flip screen which allowed waist or above head shots the G4 also used the same batteries as the canon DSLR's which made life easier and lasted longer. It also had a faster lens. Would like to see the Flip Screen and faster and wider lens mainly

I have used G9 for several month. I am emotionally attached to it already.

I've been looking at the G9 for a while but haven't been able to pull the trigger. But now the news of the Lumix LX3 is very interesting. Due out in August for US$499. Appealing stats - f2.0 24-60mm Summicron lens, bigger sensor but spread over the same 10Mp, 16x9, 4x3 & 3x2 all native, not cropped, hot shoe, etc. Lots of nice features it sounds like you folks would be interested in. More info here.

Not too long ago we bought cameras to go out and shoot with . We did not go through these phantas-magorical
exercices of thinking about a new mode that woul have 5 more functions. I own a lot of Canon G7, 5D,40D,MKIIIDs,
all of them are obsolescent....but they are tools to get great images with. If you want an investment but T-Bills or
IBM.. Grow up guys & gals !

This thread is funny... a rumor in February that the G10 would be out soon!
Six months later, Canon does a controlled fake-release with Pop Photo
so people like me don't order a Panasonic LX3 when it hits NYC next week.

I hope that the G10 doesn't look like the new PowerShot SX110 IS. I like the compact design of the G9. It's small enough
to fit into your pocket...no protrusions.
I hope the G10 uses a CMOS sensor, and has a faster lens. I also hope that it captures HD video.
I currently own a 10D, it's still great overall, but want a sophisticated point-and-shoot with pro capabaility. Once I have a
g10, then I'll go for the 50D or 60D body.
stuart jones , Sep 27, 2008; 06:54 p.m.
I have a G13 it said it was a G13 anyway .It wispered to me " hey you poor sap are go going to buy me or are you going to wait for the g14" its on the book case shelf at my home next to the Kodak 133 instamatic.
Although glass quality is VVV important a picture is only as good as the person,s capabiltiy who is looking thru the lens.I have a G9 as well as 40 D and a GREAT TIME MACHINE BEATER NIKON FM2 that if you throw against the wall will still work.

I've had many of the Canon G series cameras beginning -- would you believe -- the G1, which felt like a brick and heated up quickly...As it turned out, the G2 came out a week after I bought the G1 and they let me trade it in. I loved that camera especially the rotating viewfinder...Since then, I've bought the G3, the G6, and the G9 (my current camera). I use them with studio lights to photograph large groups (mostly gymnastic and dance groups). The quality has been excellent and the camera is easy to use...Originally, I was looking at a Nikon but I found the Canon more intuitive and easy to figure out...even without looking at the manual...As well, in the summer of 2003, I bought the 10D for around $2400.00 Canadian as well as the motor drive grip...I still use that camera but it only has 6.3 megapixels... I'm now looking seriously at purchasing the G10, since the price has come down so much... I remember paying about $1175.00 Canadian for the G6!
