Just got a new 50d with new 28-70 usm L lens. Also got a 70-200 usm L
Man am I disappointed. Color balance is way off. Focus is off. I try setting various modes (left dial program mode) and check the images against each other. All are worse than my $400 point and shoot and worse than my old minolta or konica!
No, I have no yet done the AF adjustment but still both lenses seem to be off on the focus out of the box and that seems that it should not be like that. Also the colors are just not right all has a pink cast to it. Greens look all washed out. Tried setting various color temps no luck. Bright sun 10- am to 2 -pm.
Any others have this problem? Surely I am missing something?
I be going crazy.

Are you shooting in RAW, and what specifically is your post processing?

I've seen lots of images from a 50D that are stunning, so it may be a bad camera, or more likely something going wrong with settings / processing.

Go to the menu and reset the camera to the default settings and take a photo. This should give you good images. If everything is still off there might be a problem.

Read the manual, understand all the settings and then learn how to process your pictures. A Dslr is not a &S camera. It will produce much better pictures, but you need to understand the camera first. And tehre is no new 28-70mm L lens - that's a rather old lens- I suspect you meant the 24-70!

When I got my wife her first dslr, she wanted to return it because the pics were awful. As mentioned above, I reset the camera to default settings and it is now her favorite camera.

Have you checked your colour space - adobe 98 is normally recommended for it's range and the fact that it's an industry standard.
Try processing from Raw and that should tell you whether it's incorrect operation or a bad body. (Do make sure from your histogram that your exposure is correct)
On the focus side - i have a 1ds Mk3 and in all lenses the focus plane was set too far forward.I had to manufacture a rig to test this and once adjusted, the camera is now much more accurate for focus.
Because of their poor track record in this area Canon should check this for you for free!
Good luck!

New, as in new or just new to you? As others have said, reset all defaults (especially custom settings which can be stubborn with the 50D) and confirm your results.
