What back up pocket camera?

Richard Duncombe , Dec 16, 2011; 01:16 p.m.

Hi everyone
I need to get a small pocket camera for general use. I will be working in Uganda in and around the Virunga Mountains and so in a very hot, wet environment

I have a Canon 5d so i dont need something to create amazing, creative photos as I can do that (or try) with the 5d, I just want something light (well, any pocket camera is lighter than the 5d!) that takes good photos, HD movies, i really like the panoramic mode that sone of these little cameras have, a good battery life and be as south of £200 as possible

I like the look of the Canon s95 but its probably the wrong side of £200, I also like the Sony HX7v but am never sure about Sony Cameras being compatible with Apple Laptops (i also remember the old ones needing sony branded memory sticks, not sure if this is still the case) and then there is the new Lumix Tz20 which looks good but I have read a lot of negative reviews of the image quality

I would rather have something that takes easy good, sharp, quick photos than something that tries to be an SLR, it will mostly either be used around town, out at night and in the field

any recommendations, i would love to hear. Obviously being used to the 5d i might be shocked at quality as I have not used a pocket camera for years, but i am ready to be surprised by what is now available!

If you're going to be spending time an a hot and wet environment, you should consider one of the waterproof P&S cameras, like the Panasonic TS3. DP Review has a test on them here:

They're NOT "SLR-like" but for tough environments, you can't beat them.

TS3 is a good recommendation, but it doesn't have panorama mode (auto stitching). The Sony TX10 accepts normal SD cards, and does offer panorama. It has a touchscreen-only interface, so you must decide if you can deal with that. The touchscreen does not work underwater, but might work OK in Uganda, except for the inevitable fingerprint smudging.

Powershot G12. It's operation is similar to that of the 5D and you can share a flash, if you have one. Drawbacks: it does not come cheap and it will probably/perhaps be replaced soon.

G12 is not small and costs way over £200. I forgot to mention that the HX7v is a lot like the TX10 except not waterproof: same sensor, better lens, panorama mode, takes standard SD cards.

I also like the Sony HX7v but am never sure about Sony Cameras being compatible with Apple Laptops (i also remember the old ones needing sony branded memory sticks, not sure if this is still the case)

I have a recent sony camera, a recent apple lab top and recent SD cards and they all work with each other.

Richard, I guess you want something that would do well in the automated mode? I would recommend something waterproof. The S95 and G series are wonderful but the controls are not as easy as an SLR and you don't want that any way.
A lot of good suggestions above. Why would you need a small camera? Backup or just for fun? Are you expecting to print and have the work from any small camera be part of your portfolio? This last part, I believe, should sort out the problem.

I bought it new, a Nikon P60, some years ago and I have never been surprised or disapointed with it ever since.

The price I paid was $60, way "south" for you. It is among the class of smallest P&S, not trying to be an SLR at all except it does have an EVF. It does have many Auto modes. It has been used indoors and outdoors

About IQ, well don't expect it to be the same as your 5D

hi all

I think the G series will be way too expensive and also too bulky for me. I need the camera primarily because the 5D is too big and heavy to lug around, especially with the lenses etc. I will be doing a lot of climbing and trekking for work as well as just documenting my life out there and I feel it will be a lot easier with a small pocket camera and I will just use the 5d for portrait and wildlife work. The Sony TX10, is a touch screen a little bit useless on an all-weather camera? Can you still operate it with thin gloves on?
