john smith , Dec 25, 2011; 12:14 a.m.

Hi All,

I want to buy a new digital camera . After going through internet I came down to canon s95 and panasonic lx5. Please suggest me in choosing the best camera for taking pics of my friends and family. Which one is better in terms of image quality.

Thanks in advance for all ur suggestions.

They are in two different categories. S95 is a small pocket digicam, LX-5 is a compact point and shoot with full manual controls on the camera instead of in menus. Why not go to your local camera store and handle both and decide which one feels better? Image quality is about equal from each one. The Canon S95 is probably the more popular of the two. S100 is out and replaces S95, but is not widely available as of yet.

If you go to dpreview.com, they have a test module where you can compare the two cameras technically. But as Dave says, go to the camera store, and see for yourself which camera *you* find best to handle...

The S95 has all the manual controls you could ask for. I just got one from the super Amazon deal of $229 and really, it's just a great little camera. Once you get back to the $3xx price zone, the choice is not as clear. I did order a lensmateonline.com custom grip for it since it is so small (an important factor to me).

I have the Leica version (D-lux 5) of the Panasonic LX-5. A splendid small camera, with many manual possibilities. Up tp now I have only found one downside: you have to buy the optional viewfinder if you do not like composing the image on the LCDscreen.

I had a LX3 and recently purchased an LX5 when Amazon had it for about $260. It can fit in your pocket if you've got cargo pants (or in a coat pocket), but the S95 is a truly pocketable camera and has an integrated lens cap. To me, the quality of the images is excellent for a camera of its type and the flexibility it provides is worth the fact that it's not truly pocketable. I love the LX5; it's a great companion to my X100 when I want to travel light. I think the improvements to the LX3 were modest. The S95 Amazon deal (since expired) was also compelling. I agree with the others - you can't go wrong with either, but I think you should try them out before buying.

I think you should look at the Sony HX9V...

Deja vu all over again.

One small thing is that the Panasonics(not sure about the Canons) use their own propriety software for editing and downloading. So you just can't download your pictures on any computer. Something to think about, if you happen to be on the road. You can only download the pictures on a computer where the sofware is already installed.

What? On the road I routinely have downloaded my LX-3 images and processed them on various software having nothing to do with Panasonic. My netbook doesn't have the Panasonic software in it, and I download LX-3 pics to it without a hitch.

Luis you are right ! I have the Panasonic Lumix TZ5 which came with the PhotofunStudio software. The manual says to use this sofware to download your images. However, I just plugged my camera to my laptop and was able to download all my images using the Window Live Photo gallery. thanks !
