In the face of the relentless mirrorless onslaught, I have changed the name of this forum to "Mirrorless Digital Cameras". To be honest, I got tired of being chased by mirrorless villagers wielding pitchforks.
To be more honest...
After seeing the new mirrorless offerings at CES, talking to the camera companies about what they have coming in the future, seeing sales figures from Japan and the predictions for US sales, I got pretty well sold. I think 2012 is going to be the year of mirrorless cameras for much of the world (and yes, some parts of the world are already there).
I'll change the "about" type stuff shortly to reflect the new name. But in general, any digital camera that doesn't have a mirror is "on topic" here. If you want to ask about your Nikon J1 in the Nikon forum, you are more than welcome to do so, but choosing to post here may be the better option. Just please do not post the same question in multiple forums.
The dropdown menu and page titles still need to be changed and I will get Jin on that when he has a chance. But other than that, welcome to the brave new world where mirrors are for prettyboys and real photographers don't need a *clack* noise with every shot.
EDIT
I posted the following further down the thread, but I wanted to include it here for anyone who hadn't read down that far yet.
And a side note for anyone who sees anything dismissive or negative about the renaming of a forum rather than the creation of a new one.
There is a very good reason for renaming a forum rather than creating a new one in this instance, that reason is Google/search ranking. By taking an existing forum that already had some amount of discussion on the topic of mirrorless cameras (along with a significant amount of not-unrelated discussion about high-end non-SLR digital cameras) and changing the name, we retain virtually all of the rank that google had already given this spot on the internet. In addition, the exiting threads are more or less on topic and will serve to lead people into the new forum when they come here via search. Both are advantages that would not exist if I had simply created a brand new forum on the site. Brand new "places" on the internet take a while to become known and even longer to gain the ranking that an long-existing "place" has come to have. this is true even when the site is as established and well indexed as Photo.net is.
Trust me, we're better off in virtually all ways as far as encouraging the success of this forum as a meeting place for mirrorless enthusiasts by modifying the existing forum that we would be by creating something new. If, going forward, we find that more changes are needed, we can make them. Even if we make a number of changes, we'll still be FAR ahead in terms of search results and ranking than if we had started from nothing all at once.

Hey, nobody's every called me pretty before!
I actually handled a Nikon 1 the other day (the V, for Varsity version). I get it, I think. Even if the whole camera was about the size of my caveman thumb. Certainly there's going to be non-stop change/churn/challenge/chat in this area, so good move on the forum name change. Leslie will be very happy!

Dunno about this change. I always considered this the home for non-system cameras like Panasonic LX5, Canon S90, superzooms, as well as digital point & shoot, etc.
Are (often beginning) users going to search in "Mirrorless Digital Cameras" for discussions on P&S & superzoom cameras?

None of those cameras have mirrors.
And to be fair about it, for whatever reason, we don't get a ton of "what p&s beginner camera should I buy" questions.
Never have.

I think that means all digital cameras that are not dSLRs (for example: interchangeable lens 4/3, fixed lens EVF cams, regular
digital point-n-shoots, cellphone cameras, etc), just like before. Right?

Brad is correct. Adding the term "mirrorless" is just a nod to the success and growth that the mirrorless system cameras have seen recently (and that I expect they will continue to see).

Humorous but bad analogy. Anyhow, looks more like Josh got bumrushed by the mirrorless craze reality at CES:)

It's just a name. If a new name makes some people happy, then why not.
I like the fact that we consider all the LX-5, S95, F828 as mirror less cameras

Change is good. I've been sucked in via the Samsung NX gear and it's simply way too much fun. I welcome the forum name change. It's a good catch-all forum that will see lot's of activity.
Small request though...Those Nikon V1 guys, Oly 4/3 and Pentax Q folks all will still be welcome into their respective picture threads in the forums of that brand name along with every camera ever made under those brand names. Yet the Canon folks get no such rhythm. The photos from their G1X, or S100, Elphs or whatever are not allowed in the Canon thread because they don't have EOS name branded on them. I would like to see that changed, too.

That isn't something that is going to happen at this time. The EOS forum is an EOS-only forum and is doing just fine being a place for people to discuss the EOS system. Including point and shoot cameras into the weekly photo thread isn't reason enough for me to change something that is currently working well.
Why not just start a weekly photo thread in this forum instead?
