vuescan vs vuescan pro vs Nikon scan 3

Marke Gilbert , Jun 23, 2004; 07:20 p.m.

Just picked up a refurb. Nikon LS-8000 for a song. Ive been using a canoscan FS4000US with vuescan.

At the same time, I am in the process of switching from Mac to PC, so I am about to be buying a bunch of new software. Any advantages in using Nikon scan 3 over vuescan? or vuescan pro?

Ive heard about the banding issue with the LS 8000, and scanning in superfine mode to correct-- does vuescan allow for this?

Any user opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Nikon Scan is much more convenient to use. But can have some problems clipping image detail in the highlights and shadows with negatives.

Vuescan solves the above problem at the cost of a confusing user interface. It's also trial and error to line up the frame so you get a 100% scan of just one frame.

Vuescan only scans in superfine mode, so no banding.

ICE dust removal works best in nikonscan. Color accuaracy is better in nikonscan.

As for switching from mac to pc? You will need to be deprogrammed.

Besides those already mentioned in the above post, I would like to add:

1. Vuescan and Vuescan Pro is the same software. The extra cost of the Pro version allows unlimited update in the future.

2. Vuescan does not fully utilise the ICE functions in Nikon scanner. (ICE scratch removal is a hardware/software solution but GEM/ROC is a pure software solution inside Nikon Scan software) Vuescan is a generic scanning program that has to support Nikon/Minolta/Canon/Epson etc. There are just too many scratch removal/grain dissolve software used e.g. Nikon use ICE but Canon FS4000 use FARE, Nikon use ICE/GEM but Minolta 5400 has it own grain dissolver software. As a result, the scratch removal and especially grain dissolve is not as good as Nikon Scan.

3. I find Nikon Scan doing better for E-6/negative while Vuescan doing better for Kodachrome. Therefore I use both depending on scanning what.

Only the pro version of Vuescan enables the raw file function. I find this invaluable. To compare the two:
