Colors wrong in "Save for web"?

David Taylor , May 18, 2005; 01:30 p.m.

I use Photoshop CS for all my photo editing and shoot in RAW mode. I have searched the web for this problem but have not come up with a reasonable answer. I shoot in Adobe RGB and work in CS with Srgb due to thats the color profile that my lab accepts. I also display a lot of my photos on the web. My question/problem is that when i save for web and then view them in my browser the colors are a LOT more saturated than they were when viewed on the save for web screen. I understand that if working in Adobe RGB, i would need to convert to sgrb before saving to web but as mentioned, i am already working in Srgb. Which color is right, the colors viewed in my browser or the colors viewed on the CS save for web screen? Is there a trick or work around for this situation? I can also click the View - Monitor Colors in CS and this will give me the colors i see in my browser after saving but i'm still confused as to which is right. Should i just edit all my web pictures with the "Monitor Colors" profile? Any help would be appreciated as i'm really cunfused on this subject. Thanks David

in pscs edit/color settings, what are working spaces RGB and color management policies RGB set to?
and what is profile mismatches and missing profiles set to?

I have posted below (i think) my color settings in CS. I realize it has Adobe RGB set for the default but i always just convert to sRGB when doing print work.

Your browser isn?t color managed, Photoshop is. If you use a soft proof (view-Monitor RGB) you?ll see how the image appears on YOUR machine outside of Photoshop or an ICC aware application and it should appear as you see in the browser. Be sure you?re converting to sRGB before using Save for Web. Even so, the display profile IS being used in ICC aware applications and not in your browser.

To the upper left of the SAVE button on the Save for Web screen, click the triangle and check Standard Windows Color.

Your colour settings look OK. Have you checked the link I gave and adjusted your "save for web" settings?

The only other thing I can think off is that you have overwritten your sRGB profile with another profile such as "Adobe 1998". Do a search on *.icm in windows explorer to find your profiles and check that the sRGB profile is not the same size as another icc profile. My sRGB profile is 4k but there are variations out there.

just realised you are not using windows so searching for icm files probably doesn't apply. Also, I'm not sure if mac users have to do something special in terms of gamma so that their files view normally on a PC. Perhaps some of the Mac users out there can help/explain about the differences in Mac/PC gamma and whether save for web automatically adjusts if you are using a mac.

The Mac does not automatically render the Save for Web screen in PC gamma 2.2. That's why one has to set the Save for Web screen for Standard Windows Colors.

Perfect Exposure, i am using windows. How do i check the profiles you mentioned?

if you have done a search on your hard drive you should have a list of your ICM files. On the menu line select view/details so that you can see the files sizes. My sRGB profile is 4k. If yours is any bigger then it may have been overwritten with another profile. It is possible that it is only 1k in size but check its modified date against the other profiles you have. If that is newer and or the file size is much bigger than 4k then I suspect it has been overwritten.

I have a nikon sRGB profile which is only 1k which illustrates that sRGB profiles can vary.
