Upsizing-Genuine Fractals vs PhotoshopCS3 ?

Marvin Sodicoff , Oct 29, 2007; 10:36 a.m.

I can't seem to determine whether upsizing an image is better done by Genuine Fractals or just by using Photoshop. Does anyone have an opinion on this subject?

During a printing class I took this past spring, we tried both methods using a very detailed photograph and enlarging it 400%. Genuine Fractals had significantly more detail in the final product over PS bicubic smoother and sharpening both after using PS to sharpen both. I do use Genuine Fractals now and am very happy with the results.

I think there is even another one out there called Blow Up from Alien Skin. Haven't heard good or bad about this one.

I use Genuine Fractals for all 16x20 images and larger. I uprez to 300dpi at size and send to the printer.

Genuine Fractals will let you download a free trial that works for 20 images. Early this year I got the trial and did a comparison between GF and CS2. I found I had better results using CS2 with bicubic smoother in 5% increments than I did using GF. I realize that these days the conventional wisdom says you no longer need to uprez in steps if you use CS2 or CS3 and bicubic smoother, but my comparison gave me the best results with the step method. YMMV. Best to try it for yourself using each of the 3 methods.
