Hooking up a Kodak 8650PS

Tom Barnes , May 18, 2008; 12:37 a.m.

I just picked up a used Kodak 8650ps dye-sub and I have tried using on my laptop ( XP-Pro-1GB of ram) and my desktop (Vista-2 GB of ram) and I haven't been able to print a test print. I can print a test print from the Kodak control panel but not when I try throught the USB-Parallel LP1 port? I first tried thru the Photoshop CS2 export and then added the plug and play 8650 printer. Has anyone had experance with using this printer with CS2 or CS3 ? Any help will be greatly apreciated, Thanks, Tom

If you google "Kodak 8650 PS" (make sure to put the space in after the number) you'll get a hit for Kodak's site.

It's a discontinued printer, but there are drivers there for Windows 2000/XP. There are raster drivers and also Postscript drivers; I'd imagine you might have better luck with Postscript drivers because of the nature of that particular printing language.

If nothing else, you might be able to work out something so that you can print your images to Postscript files and download those to the printer, if it's got Postscript capabilities, that is. (Mind you, I don't know anything about your printer. Some printers simply had optional Postscript capabilities that came separate for a price.)

In any event, it looks like there are drivers for 2000/XP -- here's the link I found:

If you've already got these drivers, then it's simply a matter of using the Print Setup or Print function and choosing that printer, just as you would any other printer that you've installed on your system.

In other words, I don't know why you're trying the Export function.

One other thing: If your images are 16 bit and your printer will only accept 8-bit images for printing, you won't be able to choose that printer. You might want to try converting to 8-bit, with Image > Mode, before attempting to print again.

Here is a link to the manuals:

and to the drivers:

There are drivers for Windows 2000/XP. I doubt they will work under Vista. The printer is 11-years old; Kodak no longer supports it.
