Capture NX2 Memory Problem

I started using Capture NX2 a few weeks ago and I really like it. (The earlier problem that I posted here was solved by downloading the updated version.) It's a very powerful tool and, for me, is easier to use than PS so I've been using it for most of my processing and editing work. However it's a memory hog. I know I'm on the edge with a 2.2GHz/2MB ram computer (I can't add anymore RAM) but it's been workable - until today. After processing an NEF file I was unable to save the edited file (on which I had performed 5 or 6 steps) because "engine out of memory". I also couldn't open some RAW files because "not enough available memory. So far, if I close Capture and re-start it, I'm able to open and save files again, until the next error message.

I'm using an external hard drive for the cache and temporary files so I've got plenty of space there. This doesn't seem like a RAM or processor speed issue. Is there a setting I need to change in Windows? I'm running Windows XP.

One other issue that I've had from the start that is frustrating but not as serious: If I try to do anything under Quick Fix the image goes black so I'm not able to use that feature. I have to click "undo" to get the image back. I also get some sort of "overflow error" whenever I start a new step but I'm able to continue. What would cause that? I've installed the program twice but it still happens.

Thanks for any assistance.

You can do a search on Google "make PC faster" and come up with specific tips.
There are a lot of files/modules which load when you boot up you may not need. If you are using music, dvd burning programs, etc they can fill memory you need for PS. Another thing which might help is to download CCleaner its free, then clean the registry with it. A registry filled with invalid links can slow the computer so much, it times out when doing various chores, that can cause lockups, etc.

Barry, what version of NX2 are you running? The latest one, 2.2.2? And what version of XP is on your pc? After you have checked your XP version go to the download site for NX2 at nikonusa and read carefully the things that need to be present with XP for NX2 to work correctly. If those things (service pack, Framework, etc) are not on your pc go to Microsoft site and download them. Then double check your cache settings. There are two of them. The first deals with location and will tell you how much space is available to you. The second is a limit. You need to adjust this to minimize the limit since you are using an external hard drive. MY pc is three + years old with XP pro and I do not have the issues you are having.
I would make sure that you have enough internal hard drive space for your programs to work properly. I hope that you have about 100KB of free space open on your internal hard drive. Check properties of your C drive; also look at windows task manager when you have NX2 open and it will tell you how much is being used. You might have other things running that are preventing NX2 from doing its thing.
