Why can I open THIS .dng file, but I can't open THAT .dng file?

Dan Bloch , Sep 09, 2010; 03:41 p.m.

I have one folder with .dng files that I can open in CS3 Camera RAW.
I have a second folder with .dng files, that says, "Photoshop does not recognize this type of file," when I try to open them.

Both folders where shot with the same Lumix LX-3 and passed through DNG converter.

What am I doing wrong?

Could they be corrupted?

Dan Bloch , Sep 09, 2010; 04:33 p.m.

I don't know what that means or how to tell...

Corrupted meaning the data is hosed.
You could try running them through the DNG converter again to see if it pops errors, makes sure you have the latest version of the DNG converter.

When I try to run it through the DNG converter it spits out an identical file that still can't be opened, but no errors.

I’d be happy to see if I can open them on this end (I’m running the latest version of Photoshop CS5, Lightroom etc), which might indicate something else is going on here with your older version of CS3. That said, the DNG converter should allow you to open older DNGs, that’s the entire point. But at least we could see if indeed its a file issue or something else.
You could pop one on my Public iDisk:

My public iDisk:

thedigitaldog

Name (lower case) public
Password (lower case) public

Public folder Password is "public" (note the first letter is capitalized).

To open someone's iDisk Public folder (DO NOT USE A WEB BROWSER):
Windows XP:
Choose My Network Places in the Start menu, then choose "Add a network
place" in the Network Tasks list. In the Add Network Place Wizard, enter the
following as the location to add: http://idisk.mac.com/karenrodney-Public?

Windows 2000:
Open My Computer, choose Map Network Drive from the Tools menu, then click
"Web folder or FTP site." Enter the following as the location to add:
http://idisk.mac.com/thedigitaldog-Public?

Windows 98:
Open My Computer, double-click the Web Folders icon, then double-click Add
Web Folder. Enter the following as the location to add:
http://idisk.mac.com/thedigitaldog-Public??

Mac OS X (10.1 or later):
Choose Connect To Server from the Finder's Go menu and type
http://idisk.mac.com/thedigitaldog-Public?
*Since the Public folder is protected with a password, type "public" in the
username field and type the Public folder password in the password field.

I tried updating DNG, now I get a message, "There was an error parsing the file."

I am copying to your iDisk now, thank you for helping me.

Andrew Rodney , Sep 09, 2010; 05:41 p.m.

Shot of a church at night right? Opens fine in ACR 6.X. So please check that you have the latest version of the DNG converter. My copy is at 6.1. I also tried converting the DNG you provided through it, the update is back on the iDisk. Give it a try.
Good news is your data is fine.

I just updated to DNG converter 6.2 and converted, (to another .dng file... ?), I dont get the error message anymore, but the file still wont open in CS3.

Maybe I need CS5? $$$$!
