Online Lab Color Correction/Adjustment

Andrew Laverghetta , Feb 09, 2012; 01:22 a.m.

Hey everybody. I've been uploading some photos to be printed for a couple years now and usually I have my monitor calibrated plus I use Mpix.com's soft proofing profile. I have been completely pleased with everything that has been printed for me except for one framed photo I got for my dad for this last Christmas. The reason being that the photo printed out a bit darker.
I don't check the box for color correction or adjustment because in the past, I'll submit a photo that was made with tungsten lighting and the lab color corrected it. I will sometimes use one of the warming filters in CS5 and I want to make sure the photo comes out how I wanted it to instead of adjusted to correct that part.
Has anybody had experience with what different websites will correct and what they won't correct? I noticed that Snapfish can sharpen photos and make other small adjustments. I don't usually use Snapfish as it doesn't seem professional like Mpix. When might it be alright to leave the auto-correct checked? I do realize that sometimes my photos might be a little darker than intended because my LCD monitor is essentially emitting light while a print is reflecting light.
Tips?
Thanks!
Andrew

Andrew, someone just ordered a low light 24x36 print from my Smugmug website. Since it was a larger/more expensive order I was concerned that it was a bit too grainy (older photo taken with a retired D70) and contacted Smugmug about this and to double check their warranty policy if customer was unhappy. They replied back that were more concerned about the darker areas of the photo and suggested that I lighten the waves and reflections in the water. Their reason was: Photos will display 1.5-2 stops brighter, on today's highly backlit monitors, then they will print. And they will also print with much less dynamic range (highlight and shadow detail).

Here is my image after I made the waves and sunset reflections lighter. Hope this works. It is still a little dark, but this is what the customer wants:) http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=15132972

I had second thoughts but I did leave auto-correct checked. I figured that if there was a problem with the colors, then it would not be all my fault:) They also assured me that their warranty is 100%. I have never had a complaint with over 1,000 images sold through Smugmug. Pretty good track record for them.

I always use EZ Prints when ordering through Smugmug but they also offer Bay Photo for a little more $. Bay Photo offers high-end color correction.

Check out the lab comparison test- http://www.smugmug.com/photos/pro-print-labs-compared/
Hope this helped. John
