Editors' Picks: Winter Photos

photo.net members' best

Winter: a time of purity and stillness, introspection, cold weather fun, hot chocolate to warm your toes, fuzzy woolen mittens and hats, crackling fires and a good book, a time for building snowmen and sledding, weekend trips to the ski hill for downhill skiing, and perhaps a vacation to a tropical land.

The Photo.net editors selected a handful of images that remind us of this time of year: winter. These photographs vividly capture the beautiful pristine quality of snowy winters. There is a collection of snowy landscapes and pictures of winter from many different locations. Also, there are images of snowy owls, children bundled up in warm fluffy coats, Northern lights illuminating the night sky, skiers hard at work, animals hunting in the snow, cozy cottages welcoming a cold visitor, icicles, snowflakes, and stark trees bare of leaves. These photographs incorporate the colors of winter and evoke the spirit of the season. Please add your favorite winter and snow-themed photos in the comments section below.

Winter is clearly here associated with snow and the colour of white. Global warming has already changed that perspective for many of us. The pics go however beyond the traditional "winter" images and present winter scenes where low light is the theme. Low light, mist and fog is often associated to moods of depression and yet we have whole artistic schools in painting that have been based on it in order to represent a romantic view of life. The German Romantic school o the 19th century was based on that view of nature, history and human conditions (f.ex. Arnold Bocklin, Casper David Friedrich).

I would therefore have chosen a less traditional selection of winter images: Winter images without snow !! for example. I add an example from my amateur portfolio with snow only at a distance.
