Lowepro CompuDaypack Review

by Bob Atkins; created October 2007

Lowepro CompuDaypack: ideal for a small camera outfit: an SLR and 2-3 lenses, flash and accessories, and up to a 17" notebook computer. The CompuDaypack is good for urban work requiring transport of a small photography kit and a laptop.

My Experience

I tried loading the CompuDaypack with my normal kit: Canon EOS 30D, 17-85IS and 75-300IS lenses, but couldn't get my equipment in the camera compartment in any sort of reasonable way. The camera compartment isn't deep enough to store the 75-300 vertically or horizontally front-to-back. If you look at the dimensions of an EOS 30D body (5.7W x 4.2H, 2.9D in) you'll see it's a bit of a tight fit. Put a lens on the camera, even a fairly small lens, and space becomes tight. For example, the standard 18-55 kit lens is 2.7" long, and mounted on the 30D increases the total length to 5.6". It will fit, the best position being "nose down", but there's no room to spare. Add a larger zoom, such as a 17-85IS, and you're in trouble if you want to store the camera with the lens attached.

The CompuDaypack is ideal for transporting a small DSLR kit: (Canon EOS 20D, Canon Rebel XTi, Nikon D40x, any Pentax model, or Sony A100) with a small zoom mounted, 2-3 prime or short zoom lenses, and a flash; a laptop along with various supplies; writing tablets; and a rain jacket.

As a backpack, it's reasonably comfortable and the shoulder straps are well-padded, although it lacks a waist belt. In my experience, it would be better suited as an urban or campus backpack than for long photography hikes. For carrying a larger, more complete SLR outfit and a laptop, I prefer the Lowepro CompuTrekker AW. Like all the Lowepro products I've owned and used, the CompuDaypack looks very well-built with high-quality materials and construction. I've been using a Lowepro Trekker backpack for about 20 years and it's still going strong.
