My time with this lens.
This lens may not be right for pixel peepers and the 17-55 has come out since but I remain extremely happy with the amount of utility and results. This and a Rebel class body pack a serious amount of photographic ability for the size, weight and price.

Great Lens
I bought this about a month ago, and I must say I'm really happy with it. I got it used (August, 2008) for about $350 off craigslist, and it's a great deal for what you get. I'm using it on my XTI Rebel. The quality is definitely not as nice as some of the L-series lenses I've shot with, but I am definitely an amateur photographer at best, so this lens is perfect. I've used the cheaper kit lens that comes with many of the Rebels and I feel the quality, along with the IS and USM is worth the extra cash. I don't think you'll be disappointed with this lens.

Should i upgrade to this lens ?
I bought my D-SLR(CANON 1000D) in Hong Kong with a kit set of EF-S 18-55mm IS. Overall i am satisfied with the 18-55mm but the zoom range is not what i expected. I am a beginner for SLR camera's so i need some advice. is it worth the money that i buy this EF-S 17-85mm and pack my 18-55mm in my closet or sell it ?

Options
If you find that the 18-55 doesn't have the focal range you want you could try a 24-105, or possibly a 55-250 to add onto your 18-55. But the 17-85 lens is a good all-rounder except for telephoto which is why a 70-300 is usm lens is a great partner for this lens, it allows you to go from a nice wide angle to a decent telephoto range. The 17-85 however does darken around the edges at wide settings but apart from that it is a good standard lens, better than the 18-55.

Great investment
I've used this for about two weeks and found it to be fantastic for my new studio-my apartment! I've got lots of white walls and ceilings so the flash can be bounced and this lens does work best with lots of light. Low lighting is ok too, but don't push it. Recognizing the limits of a tool does not make the tool bad, it just means the user needs to learn what the limits are.
This lens has been much talked about for some of its weaknesses but again, every tool has its limits. I love this lens and can see many photos coming out of it.
The Image Stabilizer works very well, color, with the lighting limitations in mind, are saturated and sharpness within the 24-70mm range is very fine.
