Tamron 90mm Macro - a great "Go-To" lens, Oct 22, 2013
By Derek Isaacs
I have used the Tamron 90mm Macro on both my Canon 7D and 5DMkII with great success for several years. On a 7D it gives me a 135mm macro lens that gives great working distance so it comes in handy for flower, Bee and Insect ‘Portraiture’ I use it mainly in manual mode – I really like the “Push-Pull” ability to change from Auto to manual focus and back again – very handy!
The build quality is very high – I have never had a single problem in the field using it. I would recommend this lens to all Canon users as a go-to macro lens.
Top Notch Macro, May 15, 2012

I've been using the Tamron 90mm Macro on my Canon 7D with great success for several years. On a 7D it is like a 135mm macro lens that give you all kinds of working distance so it is my preferred bug-N-butterfly lens. Stopped down several stops it is VERY sharp with high contrast. At the wider apertures, it exhibits a very smooth and creamy Bokeh and works well for portraits. Although it's still mighty sharp and may not be suitable for all portrait subjects. The AF is not up to Ultrasonic speed or quiet but it still is fast. I often use it in manual mode anyway for macro work. The build quality is great and inspires confidence and never had one problem in the field using it.
I completely recommend this lens to all Canon users as a top notch macro lens and sometimes portrait lens.
Very sharp, May 10, 2012

Like most macro lenses, the Tamron 90mm f/2.8 macro creates very sharp images. It's also small, lightweight, and has a conveniently large focusing ring. Macro shots typically require manual focus so that's a useful feature.
As this review is specifically of the EF-mount version of this lens, it's worth pointing out that the lens is compatible with Canon's specialized macro flashes as long as you use a step-up filter ring. I'm referring to the MT-24EX Twin Lite and the MR-14EX Ring Lite. You'll need a 55mm-72mm step-up filter, which will allow you to mount the accessory ring that Canon supplies with those two flashes.
This lens is also useful as a portrait lens. Its bokeh is reasonably soft and the focal length is about right for a tight portrait.
