For quality processing, is Walmart still considered decent for B&W (C41) film?
I picked up some of the mailers today from my local Walmart. I just want negs though since I scan myself, so how is this done? Write it in the special instructions section?
Can they process all B&W films or only C41 stuff?
What about MF ?
thanks

Jon,
You can search this forum-find recent & old posts about their in-store processing. The C41 is performed on site, and send out service (takes up to 2 weeks) for 120, slides, or other work. The employees at that store are not trained on send-out options-that work is sent to a different company that contracts with the chain.

C-41 processing is the variety that can be processed anywhere that they process film (it's the most common anyways). When I've sent my C-41 to their send out service (it's a different slot than their in house service) they sometimes come back the way I want, other times not. There's no one there to talk to about it since it was sent out. So I've just started to avoid them, more for the inconsistent results than anything else. For example I used to use them since develop only was less than a buck a roll, but I once sent them a roll from a half frame camera and it came back with a note that they didn't offer develop only and charged me for 4x6 prints, on 72 images. Not cheap at all (the prints however were outstanding). Another time I received my negs with dust everywhere. They weren't sleeved, just thrown into the envelope.
In my area Walmart sends out to Fuji, who then sends anything they cant handle to someone else (I've heard that anything out of the norm goes to Dwaynes but I can't confirm nor deny that). I've checked and the same Fuji lab does all of the sendout service for Fred Meyer and Target as well. Others have reported something similar with their drug stores that do send out service.
My point is that it's C-41, I'd encourage you to use a service that you can talk to the person that does the operation. If you have questions you'll know instantly.

talk to the people there. You never know if you'll find that one employee who actually knows what they're doing.

I've had good luck at WalMart for regular B&W film. I just use the send-out envelopes and write "B&W film develop only". This works for both 35mm and 120. So far the negs have all been nice and clean, especially the 120 film which comes sleeved. It's also incredibly cheap at around $2 each roll. I think Duane's does their B&W developing. I don't know how much longer this will last, but take advantage of it while it lasts.
I don't use them for color C-41 because they don't let you get develop only. Even if I write "develop only, no prints" I always get prints when I have my C-41 film sent out. I'm going to try a local place I've heard about for color negs.
I would stay away from drug store developing unless you know for sure that the person handling your negs knows what they are doing. After several instances of fingerprints, scratches, and even chocolate all over my negs (at least I hope it was chocolate) I will be going to a more professional local place for my C-41.

WalMart happens to be a few hundred feet from the back entrance of my community. The store is only 5 years old, but they dumped C41 development almost two years ago. They now have a full Fuji digital print system with several kiosks, and all of their film goes out via WalMart mailers. I understand that the film is done by either Dwaynes, or Fuji itself, but either way, they have done a great job with all of my 120 film work.
I just write what I need in the "special instructions" box, and pick it up in about a week.

Hi, can someone please let me know how to put the special instructions? Here is my experience. I had 35mm color film C-41 processing. On the special instruction i put CD ONLY, NO PRINTS. And I did not check anything for the print size selection. When I got the film back, it came with single 4" prints and a bill of $8.
I am still waiting for the 120 film with same instruction. Hopefully it does not come with prints.
Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks
