New Kodak Portra 160, I just love. I often find myself running out of good daylight though, and was wondering if New Kodak Portra 400 was just as good? I also use Fuji 160s and I've heard that Portra 400 is actually finer grained than Fuji 160. Any truth to that statement?? anything helps, thanks.

Response to New Kodak Film questions.
Not used the 160, but the 400 is made of awesome. Astonishingly good film.

Yes, the Portra 160 is just great. It became one of my favorite films quickly. Very perky without the over-the-top look of Ektar.

THe 400 and the 160 are close relatives. The 400 is a bit grainier of course, but if you like the Portra 160 and want a
400 film, Portra 400 is the obvious choice.

Yes, use Portra 400 with no reservations. The films are similar, but 160 obviously has finer grain.

I've also heard that Portra 400, although, a little bit grainier, is also much sharper???

I'm super happy with the new Portra 400. Skies have gotten cleaner and less grainy with every generation of Portra 400NC, and this continued into Portra 400. It's a little more saturated than Portra 400NC, but I don't think it goes much past "reality", and it is very tasteful. The dynamic range appears to be even greater than all the prior Portra 400NC generations, quite a few images have needed a contrast boost after scanning to get a realistic look. In that way, it's a little more like Portra 160, which always had enormous dynamic range, but thus low contrast.

It all depends on the format. I use Portra 400 in 6x6, and grain is simply not an issue.

Portra 400 in 6x7 format is beautiful!

35mm Portra 400 is sharp...almost looks like 160. Try it. I blew up an 8x10 and it looks great.
