Photo.net Newsletter: June 16, 2009

Hi %%First Name%%,

Vacation time is here for many of us. If you are a photographer, it’s hard to imagine a vacation without your camera (how about the new Olympus E-P1—see hands-on preview below). However, we all know the mishaps that can happen while on the road. Have you dropped a camera off a cliff? Lost a lens to an aquarium tank? Stepped off a ledge while taking a family portrait trying to squeeze Aunt Martha in the picture? We’re interested in hearing about your worst photography adventure, misshap, wrong turn while on vacation. “Share your photography travel adventure turned sour here.”

Got photos to print? For this month only, Epson is extending a $100 discount to the Photo.net community on either the R1900 or the R2880 printers: click here to get the discount. Also, speaking of extending deals to our community, for a limited time you can get 20% off any book you order from Focal Press, just enter the code “PHOTONET” on checkout.

June’s editorial newsletter highlights articles on photography business, equipment, Photoshop skills, and photography knowledge, in addition to feature products from Adorama, the POW, and a new Editors’ Picks. Also, Father’s Day is around the corner so make sure to consult the Photo.net Gift Guide one last time. Share your thoughts about editorial, community, photography, and anything in between on the Photo.net Blog, Facebook Page, and Twitter Feed.

Enjoy the editorial newsletter!

Sincerely,

Hannah Thiem

Current Photo Of The Week

for the week of 06.08.09

This week’s Photo of the Week is by photo.net member Marius Romila. It is an image of a lone figure with an umbrella sitting on a bench under a turbulent sky.

I’m not alone depicts a scene open for interpretation. The colors chosen for emphasis during post-processing bring out a dense rich emotional landscape. Birds dot the horizon, in the distance you can just make out a canoe with 2 figures in it. The title implies that the lone figure on the bench is not alone, although he/she looks quite alone sitting on the bench. Do you think the image would have resulted more strongly without all the additional post-processing? There’s also heavy vignetting on the corners. Does this add to or detract from the overall feel?

Have something to say about the Photo of the Week? Then you should post your thoughts on the Photo of the Week Forum.

Editorial Highlights

This month, we’re adding another installment of Missing Pages by Jon Sienkiewicz, the next column in Harold Davis’ Creativity series, an Advanced Photoshop Tutorial by Jay Kinghorn, a hands-on preview of the new Olympus E-P1, a review of the Canon Rebel T1i, as well as a continuation of Tony Luna’s Photography Business Series, and more.

Olympus E-P1 Hands-on Preview

Not the best-kept secret (perhaps that was intentional), Olympus just divulged official information that has been buzzing about for months now, on their new micro four thirds super compact E-P1 DSLR. I was able to test-drive the camera today and share my thoughts with you. Ergonomically, this camera feels very good in my hands. It feels solid (partly due to the fact that the body is stainless steel), rugged, and able to withstand some heavy use.

Harold Davis continues with his monthly column on Becoming a More Creative Photographer, to help inspire us with tips and ideas on exploring the creative side of photography. This installment is on Focusing on What Matters, in which he features example images, assignments and projects to explore some of the ideas Harold presents in the column.

Jon Sienkiewicz presents his 3rd installment of his Missing Pages: Tips for using your camera creatively column. Each installment offers tips on using your camera’s functions more creatively and will also feature a project for you to follow along and learn from.

Installment III: Aperture and Shutter Priority

Photography Business Series:

Tony Luna continues his 9-part series on “The Lifecycle of a Freelance Photography Job.” The eighth article is on Expense Accountability. Freelance photographers’ profit margin is largely controlled by good record keeping. Clients also love it when you submit an invoice that shows the same attention to detail that you demonstrated before and during the shoot. In this article, Tony will pass along a few thoughts and formats that will help you to focus on the paperwork and can actually help you make some money along the way.

Canon Rebel T1i Review

The latest entry-level Canon camera follows earlier Rebels like the XSi and XTi in basic size, shape and control layout but it adds a number of features found on the EOS 50D and even one (video) which is currently only available on the EOS 5D MkII.

Nikon D3X Review

The D3X is Nikon’s third FX-format (24×36mm sensor area) digital SLR, following the earlier D3 and D700. While the D3 and D700 share essentially identical internal electronics, the D3X is housed by an identical camera body and external controls as the D3, but the X suffix indicates that internally, its sensor has a higher pixel count, in this case 24MP vs. 12 on the D3.

Advanced Photoshop Tutorial Series: Advanced Masking

Jay Kinghorn continues his series of Advanced Photoshop Tutorials. This month, he breaks down Advanced Masking, showing us some of the advanced techniques used by photographers and professional retouchers to take full control of the presentation and style of their images.

Nikon and Canon Flash Guides

Photography is about creating images with light. For indoor, night, fill light, or certain special effects, using electronic flashes to generate light becomes an important component in modern photography. Nikon’s current flash technology is called i-TTL, and they offer five different external flash options. So far all of those i-TTL flashes have three-digit model numbers in the form of SB-n00 (e.g. SB-600, SB-900 and there is also an SB-R200) while the older, non-i-TTL flashes have two-digit model numbers (e.g. SB-28 and SB-80 DX). Therefore, it is very easy to determine which ones are i-TTL compatible. This article provides a brief history of the evolution of Nikon TTL flash technology and a guide to those five i-TTL flashes.

Canon flash units are called “Speedlites” by Canon. There are currently three shoe mount Speedlites (220EX, 430EX II and 580EX II) as well as two specialty macro flash systems (MR-14EX and MT24EX). While Canon consumer and prosumer DLSRs (such as the Digital Rebel Series and the EOS 40D/50D) have a small built-in flash, the pro series cameras such as the EOS 5D, 5D MkII and the 1D and 1Ds series cameras do not and so require the use of an external flash, often a hotshoe mounted Speedlite.
