Below is a photo of a Linhof Color. Am I correct in assuming that this is the first version? Would the knobs
not be either red or white - not both colors on the same camera? And did the tripod connecting base nor
normally have some machining done to it like scallops og something?
Is the back identical to a
Graflok/International Back? I take it the format is 9x12cm - but outer dimensions of film holders are the
same for 9x12 as 4x5" holders so I can use both formats in that back with the appropriate film holders?
The pictured camera is for sale. What would a fair price be. I will use the camera as is and use
the back for a DIY field camera, but I want my DIY to fit standard accessories. The Linhof camera comes as
is with no lens. Maybe the front standard could be used in my DIY project as well.
Thank you
for your help!

Knobs should be the same color. The back is the standard International back.
9x12 and 4x5 holders are not the same size. The camera is a 4x5".

I paid $175 for a beautiful Linhof Color five years ago. The knobs - whatever, as long as they
work. It's not a collector's item, however it is likely a very good users' camera.

Hi Peter,
I'm pretty sure that the earlies models had white knobs in the early 50's and were later red. I also seem to remember that they were originally called Kardon Color (of course that name is a Linhof name). Just the same, it is a very nice looking camera, perhaps the best styled of the view cameras.

"9x12 and 4x5 holders are not the same size. The camera is a 4x5"."
That's just plain wrong. 4x5" and 9x12cm holders are exactly the same size, and are 100% interchangeable on all 4x5" cameras (with international back).
The Kardan Color is a different model with more movements.
The Linhof Color is a great little "field monorail" - easily transportable, quick to set up, and quick to take down. It's also more stable than most field cameras, and can use lenses from 90mm to 360mm on flat lens boards without bag bellows.

The Linhof Color had black knobs, a one piece monorail and no rear rise. The Linhof Color
was made from 1958 to 1964.
The Linhof Kardan Color had white knobs, a two piece rail and rear rise. The Kardan Color
was made from 1964 to 1975.
While these cameras use many parts and accessories that also fit the Technika 45 any
parts that are unique to these cameras are no longer available should it require service.
Also as some of the parts were from the Technika IV those parts may also no longer be
available.
So make sure that the camera is in top condition. This is especially important in this case
since knobs have obviously been interchanged so it is not unreasonable to suspect that
other parts may be suspect.
