Suitable Tripod (or other support) for a Bi Kardan.

Steve Salmons , Mar 21, 2010; 11:38 a.m.

I recently sold my old Calumet 5x4 view camera to finance the purchase of a Linhof Bi Kardan (5x4 size) and I am wondering if there is any advice any users of this system could pass on with regard to supporting this rig. The old camera sat fairly happily on my Manfrotto 055 Pro but the Bi Kardan is heavier and I am keen to get something that will provide sufficient stability for it. The camera will be used almost exclusively indoors and I do not anticipate carrying it far so weight of the support is not really an issue. So any thoughts? Do you think the Manfrotto is up to the job or will I need something more heavy weight?
I would also be interested to know whether people think what I paid is right or have I just paid over the odds. The trouble is that these are listed for sale so infrequently now that it is hard to establish a going rate. The whole set up, which included Bi Kardan, extra extension rail, size 3 and size 0 boards and adapter board to hold Technika boards, cost 539 UK pounds. About 800 US dollars. That included shipping. I know that there are cheaper options but the idea was that I would not have to buy another one.
It certainly has the feel of a real precision instrument and as just stated, I am probably never going to buy another view camera so the question is pretty pointless. However I am always curious to know the experience of others. The only fault I have found is one dried out spirit level.

A Linhof 003317 Twin Shank tripod mates very well with the B system cameras.

You might consider a Majestic if you can find one where you live. These are well made, well designed, and easily capable of supporting a 4x5.
