Lens hood for Carl Zeiss Jena 50mm.?

Gary Sanford , Dec 15, 1999; 03:11 p.m.

I have the above lens which I purchased used without a hood. It has an unusually large 86mm. filter thread which limits my choices. Does anyone know a good source for a hood for this lens? I've been looking at my usual sources including some european ones without any success. TIA.

go to the following web site: http://www.arsenal-photo.com/ When your there, e-mail the owner Boris and ask him for if he has the hood for the 50mm Carl Zeiss Jena lens in stock?

I recently purchased a used one from him in a condition of 8 or very good. The prices is about $50 (USD) plus $30 extra for shipping.

The B&W company of Germany also sells a 86mm Wide angle shade that is only made on a special order basis. The price is about $85.(USD). It takes 6 to 12 weeks to get delivery from Schnieder of Germany.

The BEST shade for Carl Zeiss Jena's Flektogon 50/4 is Hasselblad's lens shade 2.8/50 made for Distagon (Hasselblad Focal Plane bodies) Cat # 40584. It is compact and solidly built.

For full details read my article in Delphi/Kiev Report (Russ & Ukr. Cameras) in the section titled "Lenses" and thread titled SHADES.

------- I believe mine is better! Just cut a circular piece out of a thick black paper, the diameter should fit the inside of Flektogon, or any lens. Than cut a square in that circle, the ideal size of it should be such that no vignetting is noticable on film, put a filter in front of it and voilà, you have a “compact and solidly built” hood. And for a song!

If you are using this lens on a smaller-than-6x6 camera (e.g. on a DSLR) you might consider Nikon's HN-13. This is a relatively long 86mm hood that is used within the Nikon 35mm system with the 72mm polarizer.

The threads are a little short, but it still mounts quite solidly on the 50mm f/4 Flektogon.

Around $10 on eBay when one comes up.
