M645 or 645/1000s??

Ronald Allinger , Dec 22, 2002; 08:41 a.m.

Hallo,

I want to buy a Mamiya 645 camera. My problem is, that I don`t know, what body, the M645 or the M645 1000s is the right one for me? Is the 1000s much better than the "normal" 645? What are the main differences?

I would be glad if somebody can help me

Thank you very much

Ronald

Get the 1000s; it has mirror lockup whereas the M645 does not. Enjoy... It's a great camera.

The 1000s is capable of 1/1000s shutter speed, while the regular M645 only does 1/500s. Both have mirror lockup and multi-exposure capability (it's the M645J that lacks these features). If I recall correctly, the 1000s has a depth-of-field preview on the camera body, while on the regular M645 you need to use the Auto/Manual stop-down control on the lens to achieve this.

As for DOF preview, all it does for me is darken everything. To realy check DOF I focus at the two positions marked for the f stop used and use the lens wide open, or the other way round i.e. focus on the nearest and furthest thing you want in focus and set the f stop acordingly. Sounds long winded but is realy easy to do 'out there'. The old M645's (normal and 1000s) are great cameras, I don't think I have ever used the 1000th sec shutter speed. Lenses, (all 'C') the 45mm is a great lens for day to day use, 80mm sharp as a pin, 35mm wide or what and the 210 sharp, too sharp for portraits. That all the lenses I have for the M645 so can't comment on others.

Have fun

Here is a great page with information and comparisons between all of the 645 models:

Here is a link to the Mamiya sponsored chat page on Mamiya 645 cameras:

The differences are few - the 1/1000 sec is the main one. I've got an M645, I've never yet shot at 1/500 on it, so I don't miss the faster speed. If you think you would, get the 1000S. If not, the cheaper model is fine.

Hey Doug, thanks for that link to the Mamiya 645 website. It answered two nagging questions I've had for a while- 1). Whats the differance between all these sub models 1000S/Super/J/etc 2). And which M645 models have interchangable backs.

Thanks again,

Stu :)
