Mamiya 645 1000S

I have thought of trading "up" from a 1000S to a Mamiya Super with power winder. I used one (a Super) the other day and it is much more 35 mm-like than my 1000S brick. Candids and spontanoeus stuff seem easier with the Super. The 1000S seems destined for the tripod shoot in perpetuity. Having said this, I have read that the Super is not a trade up at all from the 1000S. It is apparently more plasticky, less of a professional camera than its predecessor, the 1000S. The gear mechanism is suppose to be susceptable to breaking and it is said to be less sturdy mechanically than the 1000S workhorse. Does anyone have insight into this? How do I resolve this debate? I am not a professional, just someone who likes shooting high quality images of people, places and things. The no nonsense insight of photonetters is always appreciated. Thanks

Perhaps just get the powerwinder or a grip for your 1000s? They did make one, it isn't compatable with the new ones though. My 1000s is (at least) 25 years old and is still going strong and I love it. The lenses are the same as the Super so you're not loosing on quality. If you don't miss the removable backs of the super I can think of no reason to trade up.
