Kiev / Hasselblad

Jon Benson , Sep 18, 2008; 08:48 a.m.

Just a simple question. Will the Keiv lenses or film backs work on my 500c body? Trying to save some $$$ Thanks, Jon

No, they will not fit a 500C. Even on the Hasselblad 1600F and 1000F (the Kiev is a crude copy of those) they will usually not fit.

There are modified Ukrainian magazines that are claimed to fit but I'd be carefull, as damaging the magazine/body interlock is not recommended. The finders from the Kiev and its successors will fit on a 500c but not the other way round.

A related question: Will my Hassy 1000F lenses fit on a Kiev body? I have a Tessar 80, Sonnar 250 and a Dalmeyer 500cm, but my 1000F body is touch and go. Any info is greatly appreciated.

Kiev lenses do not have leaf shutters, so even when they are converted to a Hasselblad mount, they would only be useful for those with focal plane shutters (2000 series). There is a 30mm Arsat that is marketed for Hasselblad 2000 users for less than a quarter of the price of the Zeiss Distagon-F "equivalent". That same site used to market Kiev roll film backs for Hasselblads, but does so no longer, though there is still some evidence that they used to do so. I assume that the new version of the Kiev backs was less compatible with the Hasselblad bodies.

Raymond,

There are at least two different Kiev mounts, one of which is compatible with the Pentakon 6, I believe.

Ulrik Neupert , Sep 19, 2008; 04:25 a.m.

Raymond, I have never had a Kiev camera in my hands to try if the Hasselblad 1000F-lenses will fit. Better have your 1000F repaired anyway. Or get a fully CLA'd 1000F body from me in exchange for your Dallmeyer 500 mm lens.

1000F lenses can on Kiev

Raymond, I know somebody trustable, that has a 1000f (or a 1600f either), and he uses it's lenses on Salyut-S, with infinity focus. But the top of the lens isn't really at the top, mounted on a Kiev, it is a little on the side.

For the backs, I'm exploring the problem, it seems that Hasselblad 500 have larger frame protruding from the body into the back, so ukrainian backs need more modifications to be put on a Hasselblad, than the swedish back to go on a Kiev.

Another problem seems to be the larger gap between body and back due to the little protruding frame from the ukrainian body, there is a light issue. Also old type Ukrainian back absolutely needs the little needle tha gets out at the end of the cocking, NT ones doesn't except to reset automatically the double exposure lever.

I have modified a classical Hasselblad back, and a newer one (crank model, 12 button), and still experimenting, on both a Kiev 88, and Salyut-S, when every issue will be adressed, I'll post a full tutorial for such modification.

And, why bother with a Kiev back on a hasselblad when both back can be found for almost the same price.

The bigger question is why bother experimenting with Hasselblad backs, to make them fit Kievs??? Kiev backs are too expensive, whereas... ???

I'm a challenging donkey

Kiev OT backs can have problems keeping film plane, I don't like post '74 ones, and pre-'74 are hard to find.

NT ones are simply ugly with their plastic slide support, and seem to be less reliable than old ones.

For the time I had my Zenith 80, I settled to its good backs, now it is gone I have a Salyut-S, a Kiev 88, and the backs I had with them are no good.

So I looked around and helped by the euro/dollar par I had some deals to have Hasselblad backs for next to nothing. Also that's a funny challenge, everybody on the net pretends they can't be mounted on Ukrainian bodies. As I can't take something for right until I've seen it myself (Yes, I'm a real donkey), I'll try and say to the world it can be done easily.

So then it could help people who want to use 220 or even 70mm film on Kievs.

I think a little modification on the kiev can be done for it to be able to use both original and non-modified Hasselblad backs (or just slightly modified to keep compatable with V bodies), but it will be next step only.

Thanks Ulrik for your kind offer. But if I trade away my Dallmeyer, I would lose half the reasons to have a 1000F. Cheers. Raymond

The interchangeabiity of the backs and lenses between the Kiev including its older versions WILL NOT work on neither the Hasselblad 1600F & 1000F.

The back gears are different in spacing and the lens mount have a similar in appearance look to it. That is where the similarity ends. The pitch of the lens mount threading of the Hasselblad lenses are finer and a bit smaller then that of the Kiev/Salyut lenses. The Hasselblad lenses will fit, but will not lockup. Again the sloppy machining and tolerance of the Kiev mount tends not to allow one to mount some of the Hasselblad lenses.

Best advice would be to simply buy a Hasselblad 1000F or have your 16000F/1000F repaired so that you can enjoy Zeiss optics. Raymond, not sure where you live, but you would to search out a good repairman to fix your Hasselblad 1000F. Once fixed, you will enjoy more. I have (2) 1000F bodies with an assortment of Hasselblad lenses and 3rd party German optics from that period.

Thanks Evan:

I am in Edmonton, Canada. We used to have a Hassey repair person in town (not anymore), but his verdict was that there were no parts available and it was not worthwhile repairing it. So my 1000F just sits there. Its higher shutter speeds still work but the slow ones are shot. Also, I accidently dented its shutter, although it still moves and there is no light leak. I don't think there is anyone who would repair it with a reasonable cost, even if there are parts.

Cheers Raymond

Jérôme Desfontaine , Sep 29, 2008; 08:53 a.m.

There can be parts

In France, we have somebody that already did a revamp of 1600f, with parts from a Salyut, here is his site: www.photo-technique.com

And here is a post from him on collection-appareils.com forum (Mael Bilquey), if you read French, it was backed-up from Google caches, after the forum crashed, and not already laid in shape:

(link)

I think the price he will ask is worth for your Hasselblad, too bad the change rate is particularly huge these days.

Perhaps he has kept the Salyut for parts, and if you only need the slow speeds to be serviced, this part from the salyut weren't used for the 1600f repair.

Don't hesitate to send a mail or give a call (just beware of local time), he always gives good advises.

Fix a Hasselblad with Kiev parts?
Better send it to David Knapman, (Pro Camera Services, Landvetter, in Sweden). And then be very patient. ;-)
But fix a Hasselblad with Kiev parts???

Jérôme Desfontaine , Sep 29, 2008; 07:48 p.m.

Why not fixing Hasselblad with Kiev parts.

Hasselblad service offices say that there are no more parts for 1600f/1000f, and few bodies are left working, beside this, there are lots of ukrainians all around.

In the forum post I mentionned before, Mael Bilquey pointed that the Salyut shows improved design, assembly and materials compared to the 1600f and said they are 95% alike or substituable betwen both.

He's some kind of passionate engineer, he does adjusted custom built big format cameras, and for some repairs, pick parts from clones or originals. Last year, he repaired a russian rangefinder with parts from a Contax.

Evan> Have you ever had a Salyut or Salyut-S in hands to try and confirm lenses do not fit? It would be interesting to know wich ones mount and wich ones doesn't.

For the back gears, I assume Hasselblad have kept compatibility from the 1600f to the V series. If it is the case I can then tell you they are fully compatible and can work on Ukrainian bodies. And I don't say it from internet forums readings, but I tested it by myself, and had no interleave problems, I was even able to take 13 shots on a roll (well, in fact, only 12 by myself, my sister's kid took the 13rd one).
