Agfa Rodinal Special is BACK !!!

Martin Tai , Jul 07, 2006; 07:36 p.m.

Agfa Rodina Special, my most favorite developer for developing Technical Pan, Ilford PanF was discontinued for more than a year when Agfa chemical division was sold.

Now the company which bought Agfa's chemical divison has resumed production of Agfa Rodinal, Rodinal Special and Studional !!

Rodinal Special, Studional are back !! I don't know when these developers will be available in North America. Shipment from UK to Canada requires a minium order of 100 pound stering, that is too steep for a bottle of 125ml developer !

I have used a number of other developers, but one quality of Rodinal Special beats out others: its long shelf life of opened bottle. An opened bottle of Rodinal Special can last up to 2 years still retains its full developing power. While other developers have lost all developing power in six months after open up a bottle. Secondly, it produces very clear film base. Thirdly, it is extremely cheap !! I need only 1ml Rodinal Special to develop one roll of 9.2mm Minox film!!

Martin, aside from shelf life as you pointed out, what other differences are there between Rodinal vs Rodinal Special ?

  • Rodinal's main component is Para-aminophenol, Rodinal's main component is phenidone(1-phenyl-3 pyrozolidone).
  • Rodinal Special is a fine grain developer, Rodinal is a large grain developer

Where was it when I needed it? (Never imported to US.)

What developing time/dilution/exposure for minox tank + agitation method?

I aquired some Rodinal Special from the UK to try out.

The instructions recommend 1+15 dilution and 4 mins for APX 25, but the messages I've seen here seem to be for longer dveloping times and lower concentration?

Also does it allow pushing the exposure, or should one stick with the rated film speed only?

thanks,

-Anthony

Rodinal Special can be ordered from

Lumiere-shop.de

They ship to Canada (and elsewhere), and without crazy minium order of 100 pound sterling that sort of thing.

I placed an order for two bottles of 125ml Rodinal Special for total of 21.6 Euro only; one bottle of 125ml Rodinal Special cost 5.8 euro 10 eur for shipping

"The instructions recommend 1+15 dilution and 4 mins for APX 25, but the messages I've seen here seem to be for longer dveloping times and lower concentration" 4 mins is too short for me, I use Rodinal Special at dilution of 1+60 for 16 minutes. I have not tried push processing

My two bottles of 125ml Rodinal Special bought from lumiere-shop.de (on back order) arrived yesterday.

The now package(left) is still the same red and white box, with minor change from the old one (right): * AGFA replaced by AGFAPHOTO

* "Fine grain-developer" printed in small letters under "B & W DEVELOPER"

The instruction sheet still has the old Agfa with diamond.
