different approaches. filters, hdr, joining..

jonathan stott , Nov 20, 2009; 06:17 p.m.

i am wanting to see the differences between the different shooting and processing methods (for landscapes) to help me select which method to use , or work towards mastering.
i want to compare the approaches of using grad filters, to hdr, to joining pictures (ie sky to land along horizon) or any other method or combo.
are you aware of any links where people have done direct comparisons. it would be realy interesting to see results of same pictures shot/processed in different ways.
or if anyone wants to post comparisons, please go ahead.
which methods do you like most?

Please take a look at this thread: http://photo.net/nature-photography-forum/00UKg5
There are frequently several ways to achieve the same goal. Use whatever method that you prefer.

i am buisy reading that shun.

the last shots i took were with grads (hitechs which are not bad). i was shooting into the sun, but the chromatic abberition got amplified terribly. and then there are problems with ghosting, halo's ect. i want to expand my approach.
unusually i read there's aproblem with lens flare with hdr... flaring is one reason i want to get away from ND grads.

The only way your going to achive the results you want is by experimentation, you can be told, I use this and it works for me , but will it work for you ~! With the sun the Angle is the answer to avoid flare and other problems : Good Luck

I posted an example and explanation some time ago here:

(One image is missing and today I would do this slightly differently than the way it is described here, but the basic concept is there.)
