Broadway Photo, Brooklyn NY : bait and switch phone recording

I just finished recording a bait and switch converstion with Broadway photo and will be posting it on a website soon. I was going to buy a 3rd GL1 because theri price was so attractive, but I was pretty sure they were a scam outfit since I had the same experience purchasing a laptop from a bait and switch called Barnett computer warehouse who changed their name to Comp direct. The story goes.. Low prices in ad in a reputable mag like DV mag, go to their website, place the order, get an email with confirmation that it will be shipping soon, 24 hours later get an email saying please call this number to confirm, when you call you get http://home.attbi.com/~cbivins/scam.zip (a recording I made of the phone scam)

Thanks for posting that Bob. This is such a blatant bait and switch. If this doesn't convince you not to buy from them, nothing will. A very sarcastic salesman tries to make you feel ignorant while he avoids direct questions and tells you to "trust him" about the rebate. If you are even considering buying from this company, listen to this recording first.

I have just experienced the same frustrating thing. This time, not only has Broadway Photo tried it but their counterpart A&M Photo World just tried the same thing. I ordered a camera. They call me a couple of days later and tell me that the camera is not available as their website indicated. I need to pay $60 to $80 more for the "better" model. Both times, they got really nasty with me when I told them that I just wanted to cancel the order and go somewhere else. The guy from Broadway even went as far as to say that I was "wasting his time" because I had questions about the differences in the model I ordered and the one he was trying to get me to buy. He hung up on me when I said I wanted to go somewhere else. I will never deal with this company or any of it's affiliates ever again.

These people should be run out of business, pure and simple. I purchased a high-ticket item (Canon EOS 1Ds Mark II) at $7,695 as listed on their website. I was contacted only to find out that the camera was gray market and had no US warranty but I could upgrade to a US version for an additional sum of money. Bait and switch? I fully intend to notify the New York State Attoney General. If more people did the same, I'm sure the whole bunch would be working at Burger King.

Same thing here. Ordered a Sony-T100 to use as a handy pocket camera. Placed the order online, next day got an email saying I needed to call to confirm. Called the place, waited through three operators, and finally got the customer service, errr, hatchet man. He first went through the expected verification process, then he went on to say that the battery that comes with the camera would only be good for 20mins and about 10 shots, but that he'd sell me one for $69...a $30 discount if I ordered it now. I declined, but he quickly said he'd knock the price down to $49. I still declined, saying that I'd try it out and get one later if I needed it. He didn't like it, but he then asked if I needed a memory stick, which I declined. He then went on to offer a lens cleaning kit, a tripod(!), and a few more things that I can't remember. I finally just said all I needed was the camera, and he seemingly complied, reviewing my order a Sony-T100 Japanese version. I told him there was no indication on the website that it was a non-US version, and that I felt like he was trying to bait and switch me. He then asked if would I like the US version that it would be an additional $50. He asked would I like to order the non-US version, to which I replied "no." He then said, "Ok, I'll cancel the order. Goodbye." Then he hung up. I was so pissed I went to their website and saw no indication anywhere of gray market or non-US products. I just found this page, and just had to post my experience. Stay away from this deceptive company and their website bwayphoto.com. By the way, I tried to listen to the original poster's recording, but it was a dead link.

DO NOT EVER BUY ANYTHING FROM BROADWAY PHOTO. This company is a scam. It amazes me how companies like this even exist. Can someone explain to me how a company like this continues to make hardworking peoples lives miserable?

I am very sorry for each of you. Going through those messes is very hard, however thank you for posting these cautions. I am in the process of replacing a point and shoot and thought I would see how good a price I can get. I still may shop, however it will not be at Broadway Photo! Thank you all, Lisabeth
