I am considering buying this discredited, useless hybrid concoction
and replacing/dumping the 410 part with a standard N90S back to
convert the camera back to film work. Will I have a problem with
that? I read somewhere there are two troublesome wires inside the
battery compartment needing careful attention. Would the surgery blow
up in my face? Anyone?

I would think you could buy a used n90 for less than the cost in time and money of MAYBE converting a DSC to work properly. Then again, it your money and time.

True, but N90s's are going on ebay for $325-$450. A standard N90s film back can be had for well under $50, I think. Since the DCS410 part is attached to an N90s only with one screw and an insert into the battery well.... a conversion back to film is not brain surgery. Thing is to find an old Kodak DCS410 someplace that could be going for dirt, since they are so limited, and loudly obsolete a couple minutes after hitting the market. An N90s, after all, is still an N90s....right?

In some other discussions I've seen of bridging DCS cameras and N90s, there have been concerns about folks wearing out the shutter. Some (not all) DCS users are very high-volume, and quickly blow past the 50,000 shutter cycle design life of an N90s.
Me, I have an N90s I hardly use. The wife won't let me sell it, as she says it's 'hers' (she borrowed it for Nikon school five years ago). I have half an eye open for a DCS460 'cheap', maybe with the shutter shot out. Then I can use my N90s with it.

I think people maybe be ASKING for that much but people are not buying them. In my area ( SF bay area) I seen and called a few camera stores looking for a used back up F100 and stores are usually out of stock but offer me N90s with Mb-10 for $300-350 and WAY under $300 for the camera alone. It seems that in the last 6 months, prices for N90s have dropped by almost $150-200.
In anycase, it your time and your money. You don't have to justify anything to people here but it seems that you are trying to justify this swap to yourself....and that should be telling you something.

My original question was technical. How easy or hard would it be to make the conversion back to film? Has anyone done it??
By the way, I just tallied the last 16 completed purchases of N90s's on ebay, ranging from a high of $426 to a low of $265. The average sale price came to $329.00. Not very scientific, grant you, since some were called mint, some had the add-on backs, others not.
Holy Chicago, all I want to do is save myself a hundred-plus bucks if I can, Jocko. My time is MY time in any case, and not relative. Some Nikon heads spend all their free time discussing Pluto in bars. (Or is it Plato?) Justify up your arse.

I converted a DCS200 with its N8008s front-end back to film by buying a databack (MF20) for $35 at a camera show. I believe that the DCS410 powers the N90 by sticking a "dummy" battery pack up the N90s. This is different from the DCS200 which did nothing but screw onto the N8008s and come in through the databack contacts. I would bet that Kodak did nothing else to the N90s than that.

Hi- I have converted a DCS NC2000 with a N90s.
1) remove the long screw at the bottom of the DCS. This is the only thing holding the DCS back to the Nikon.
2) Remove the battery holder from the Nikon. It has wires that hold it to the DCS back.
3) You will need a film back, and a battery holder for the Nikon. After you install these, you will need to reset the N90(use the green buttons, this is in the N90 instruction manual), and you will need to rewind the camera (to reset the film counter). If you want, you will need to replace the focus screen, you can use the DCS screen if you can live with the CCD image size on the focus screen.
4) Camera should work after this.
