What's In Your Camera Bag?

Ray Negus , Jul 27, 2004; 01:58 a.m.

Yes this is a blatant gear thread but I make no apologies.

So what's in your camera bag? No, not on the shelf at home but the bag you actually take outside on a regular basis. I ask this in the Nikon forum because that's what I'm shooting with right now.

List the little things too if they're worth mentioning.

Tamrac Pro 12 bag with Nikon D100, Tokina 28-70 f/2.8, Sigma 70-200 f/2.8, Nikkor 50 f/1.8, Nikkor 18-35mm, Sigma 90mm f/2.8 macro, Tamron 24-135, Sigma 1.4x, SB-800, 77mm filters, sync cords, light meter, extras CF cards & battery, USB reader & cables, manuals, Bogen mini-tripod, AA batteries, Maglight, leatherman, gaffer tape, Altoids, pen, paper, kitchen sink.

Scratch the last item, no, wait...

Ian Everhov , Jul 27, 2004; 02:36 a.m.

My mini-kit is; F3hp with 28/2.8 Ai-s, 55/3.5 Micro and a 105/2.5 Ai-s. A Rolleiflex TLR, Seconic L508 plus extra batteries, some filters (pol, red and yellow) cable release, time clock for long exposures (i usually shoot with 25iso film) a maglite and one of my two gitzo tripods with ball heads. All packed in either a backpack, domke F2 or my cam-fis photo-vest. Sometimes i also slip in my M6 and 35/2, loaded with Tri-X.

Jose Angel , Jul 27, 2004; 02:37 a.m.

Lastest time, FM-2N and one lens, 45/2.8 P. The original FM-2 camera case and two filters, L1BC and A2. Two rolls of Velvia 100F. I use more often a F3. All this into a small mountain backpack. At this time, I`m shooting landscapes and some countryside details. When needed, I take another lens, usually I don`t take more than two lenses (I have used this month also a 300/4.5, 28/2.8 and a 50/1.4). When needed, a Gitzo 126 tripod, cable and always pencil&notebook, lenshoods. Usually I know what I want to shot.

Next week I will shot some portraits at the seashore. I will take F4, 28-105, 180/2.8, flash, meter, Velvias, and A2 filter, all into a Domke F2 bag. If my luggage is not so huge, I will take also a 85/1.4 and probably a Mamiya 6.

Aside from the cheese sandwich and all of the ants?

Scott McLoughlin , Jul 27, 2004; 02:42 a.m.

bag - Domke "Little Smaller" canvas bag

body - Nikon FM3a

lenses - 28/2.8 AIS, 45/2.8 AI-P (whatever it's called), 105/2.5 AIS (sometimes the 135/2.8 AIS instead); filters (all 52mm) - medium yellow filter, red filter, crappy polarizing filter (need to upgrade here)

sometimes flash - SB-800 and diffuser attachment; meter - small Sekonic Twinmate L-208 incident meter

misc - pocket knife, tiny flash light, micro fibre cloth, Sharpie marker, cable release, extra rear cap, extra 52mm front cap; extra batteries; folded small plastic trash bag in case of down pour

film - typically Fuji Neopan 400, a roll of TMAX 3200 "just in case", NPH, recently FP4+ and Reala, and occasionally cheap Superia 400 (I always seem to regret this)

other camera system - I often have a Bessa R rangefinder and a lens or two, always the CV 4/21 and maybe the CV 1.5/50 or 2.5/35 for two-camera shooting (the CV 1.5/50 Nokton simply rocks). The CV body/lenses are small enough they fit in the same bag alongside the Nikon kit with no problems if I don't pack the SB-800 flash. Or if I'm shooting B&W with the Nikon, sometimes I'll slip in my Rollie AFM35 P&S loaded with color film.

I have bigger and smaller bags (LowePro stuff), but for me, this Domke bag is perfect. It's pretty small, and there's plenty room left over for more. With the simple 3-lens Nikon kit, it's a pretty light package as well. It's always "at the ready," and I carry it pretty much wherever I go.

No fast Nikon lenses in the standard bag kit, but so far I'm pleased the the 45's performance vs. the 50mm faster alternatives. I may spring someday for the 85/1.4 to replace the 105/2.5 in the bag. Who knows.

Graham Hughes , Jul 27, 2004; 03:09 a.m.

Well, in the one sitting next to me:

Small format: FM3a, noname 28mm, 50mm f/1.4 AF, 135mm f/2.8 AI, extension tubes

Medium format: Bronica S2A, spare back, Nikkor 50mm f/3.5, 75mm f/2.8, 135mm f/3.5, Fuji GA645

Misc.: light meter for Bronica, 52mm filters, 67mm filters, 82mm filters (!), mini tripod, 75mm hood, cable release

Film: In 120: Neopan 400, ACROS, FP4+, Reala. In 35mm: Neopan 400, FP4+, Neopan 1600.

You can tell I've been on a MF kick for the last while. I could probably stand to reshuffle that; I don't really need the GA645, and that would make my Nikon easier to get at.

Contents of smaller bag depends on what I'm planning on doing, but is frequently either FM3a + primes or Bronica gear.

Julian Hart , Jul 27, 2004; 03:25 a.m.

Well usually...,when I use my Nikon -

FM3a, 55f2.8 micro, extension tube, FP4, HP5, 160VS, cable release, 2 x plastic carrier bags, spare QR head for tripod, white reflector, silver reflector, 150 x 200mm piece of glass, vaseline, 25mm paint brush, white handkerchief, Pentax Digital Spotmeter, compass, spare batteries, yellow, orange, red and green, ND and polarising filters, mobile phone, (and a walkie talkie radio if I'm out with my mate!)

Cheers, Julian

ps - I think this is an interesting thread, not to see the gear, but what other bits and pieces others take with them.

Ray Negus , Jul 27, 2004; 03:34 a.m.

Man, you guys carry a lot more stuff than I do...

Nice to see so many manual Nikons. I expected more digital (I'm a D70 man myself, but used to shoot lots of medium format. Kind of regret selling that system).

Lex (perpendicularity consultant) Jenkins , Jul 27, 2004; 04:55 a.m.

It hasn't been long enough since the last thread of this type so I'll pass. But have fun.

I will say that three things that always accompany me are pocket lint, no tea and my towel.

Elliot :) , Jul 27, 2004; 05:06 a.m.

Primes only (fast lenses), a camera body or two, a flash, flash cord, batteries, film/memory cards.

David H. Hartman , Jul 27, 2004; 05:17 a.m.

Which one?

Ray - , Jul 27, 2004; 05:22 a.m.

you guys must be big and with lots of spare muscles and energy. i carry D70 with 2 primes, cir/pol filter. bag? what's that? one lens in the pocket and just stroll...

maybe a gitzo weekender legs when i get that :-) i won't be taking the 1228 unless i need it.

Antonio C. , Jul 27, 2004; 05:44 a.m.

Just a Nikkormat FT2, D100, 50 f/1.8, 35 2.8

Michael King , Jul 27, 2004; 06:02 a.m.

I have a bag and it accomodates everything I own (which isn't much looking at some of you guys...)

I usually just go out with an FM2 and one lens hanging off it, sometimes a second one in my pocket if I take the primes. Film in the other pocket (Cargo trousers are indispensable).

Robin Stacey , Jul 27, 2004; 06:14 a.m.

Good thread! In my pocket: Centon Dc5 didigam. Ipaq 2215, money and keys in the other. In my bag: Canon EOS 300D (or EOS 10 if the mood takes me) usually with the Tamron 28-300 XR lens attached. 50mm f/1.8 and the 17-55mm in there too along with flashgun, pocket knife, a handful of filters, spare CF and SD cards, an old Nikon 885, spare batteries and a table top tripod. In the car: The Olympus OM-10 bounces around in the trunk with a pouch containing ten rolls of film. Two monopods and sometimes the tripod too.

Joe Margetts , Jul 27, 2004; 06:23 a.m.

Equipment:

FM3a with MD-12. 50mm 1.2 AIS, 24mm f2 AIS (maybe AI), 35mm F2 AI, Tokina AT-X Pro 2.8 80-200 Zoom, SB-28 and a little tripod (can't remember what).

Other stuff: Spare batteries for camera and flash and drive, film Velvia 50 and Ilford FP-4, cable release, instructions manuals, spare body cap and lens back cap, Pentax lens cloth, some Polaroid film for my 6 year old sons i-Zone fun camera, and a plastic bag.

This seems a lot but fits nicely into a Canon Custom gadget bag 100 which is easily manageable.

I also like making pictures as well as carrying this kit around!

*) N90s, 28-70/3.5-4.5 AF.

Also: lens tissue, spare battery, Swiss knife, cheat sheet for F80, towel, tissues, plastic bags. Optionally, mostly a tripod, cable release, SB-80DX & SC-17, Minolta spotmeter, Fuji GSWIII med format, Moose warm polariser, 2 stop Singh Ray ND grad and Cokin rings, 4T diopter.

Klaus Hubrich , Jul 27, 2004; 07:17 a.m.

Small every day bag is a Samsonite messenger bag with Tenba PI13 photo insert. It contains a F80 with a 50/1.8 attached, an additional 24/2.8 and either a 105/2.8 Micro or a 70-300G, all are AF-D lenses. Additionally a SB800, a Hama level and a small table top (Bogen 3007). Optionally a compact bino or a Rollei 35AFM. Small accessories are a cable release, CP filter and skylight filters for the primes, lens tissue+paper and a blower. Some rolls of Velvia and Superia, maybe B&W film. Spare batteries. Pocket card for customs functions of F80.

When taking more equipment or hiking I take a Lowepro Rover AW Plus with the aforementioned equipment and maybe a F3 with an AFD 180/2.8 and a Kenko pro 2x converter. My tripod is a Bogen Digi 724B, quite high and lightweight.

Pocket knife, sun glasses, map/guide of the area and something to read and eat&drink. Depending on weather conditions rain/sun protection.

Depends on the forum. On this forum:

F2AS or F3hp, 28/2.8, 50/1.4, 105/2.5, all AI or AI-S.

On the Leica forum:

M7, 40/2, 50/2, or

M4, same lenses, plus V/C meter.

On the Digital Forum:

D1X, 24/2.8 AF-D, 28-105 AF-D or...

Olympus 8080.

On the medium format forum:

Rollei TLR 2.8F.

Yellow and orange filters Hoods. Lens pen.

Loads of film.

I am just an average amateur photographer, but a very good gear freak with associated NAS and all ;)

Bag's packed ready for trip to Aachen Friday morning and weekend in Brussels. Canvas & leather WWII army-surplus shoulder bag containing; Nikon F2 (plain prism), 28mm PC-Nikkor, 50/1.2, 85/1.8 (wrapped up in a piece of chamois leather), hoods, spare lens cap, binoculars, compass, A5 spiralbound notebook & several pens, 20 Camel Lights & Zippo, maps and floor-plans of key buildings, mobile phone, copy of Bishop Einhard's "Life of Charlemagne", Eurostar ticket, passport, iPod, dust, blue stain from where pen leaked last week, 8 rolls of Provia, Sekonic L408 lightmeter + spare battery

Eric Carter , Jul 27, 2004; 09:07 a.m.

Lowenpro bag (don't remember the model #, just that it's one with the velcro dividers inside and that it's weatherproof) with...

- Nikon D70 - Nikkor 18-70mm F3.5-4.5G AF-S DX (The kit D70 lens)
- Nikkor 50mm F1.8D
- Tamron AF70-300mm F/4-5.6 LD Macro 1:2
- 2 512MB Compact Flash Cards (Lexar x16 I think)
- 3 spare EL2 batteries and the converter for them for the D70
- Lens cleaning fluid and tissue
- Static free blower brush thingie
- 20GB IOMagic Photo Library Storage Unit
- Bogen Quick Release Plate
- Nikon IR remote
- Circ Polarizer w/ stepup rings for all lenses
- Clear plastic bag (big enough for camera/lens)
- Anything else I think may be useful

And a partridge in a pear tree.

The fact is, though, that I change things out on a very regular basis depending on what I think I'm going to need at any given time. This is pretty much my "walking around" kit though. If I want to go very light, I have a small belt-bag that will carry the D70 with the kit lens attached, wipes, one polarizer and maybe the 50mm lens if I feel so inclined, or a lensbaby lens. If I think I'll need it, I also have a Lowenpro "sling" bag for my tripod or monopod - just walking around though most times, I don't bother.

John Cofer , Jul 27, 2004; 09:23 a.m.

Let's see. Bag is small olive-drab with Nikon logo I picked up used for about US$5.00 10 years ago. Contents:

Nikon F Photomic FTn, 20mm /f3.5 Nikkor-UD, 24mm / f2.8 Nikkor-N, 35mm / f2.0 Nikkor-O, 50mm / f1.4 Nikkor-SC, 85mm / f1.8 Nikkor-H, 105mm / f2.5 Nikkor-P, 135mm / f3.5 Nikkor-Q.

Hoods for all the above and a couple of rolls of film.

Hm. Looks like this quickly turned into a lame, self-indulgent, masturbatory thread where everybody merely lists off every item of gear they own in an ineffective attempt at showing off.

Besides the usual/unusual camera gear, I also carry a mini-first aid kits which cost about $5, a tiny flashlight ,cellphone,a couple packs of hand sanitizer,a small traveller pack of Kleenex tissue and a keyring container of pepperspray.....sometimes I go to places without proper toilet facilities and someplaces that might not be the safest areas to travel to at night. ( the pepperspray stays home when I do air travel of course).

I like to carry a plastic bottle of water too if possible.

Robert Lai , Jul 27, 2004; 10:57 a.m.

I have two small bags, each containing a camera and some accessories.

Lowepro Lumina Beltpack: Nikon F3 with MD4+MN-2 cells and MF-18 databack. The MD-4 carries a Kirk AS QR tripod plate. 35mm f/1.4 or 50mm lens. SB-17 flash unit in a separate compartment. Gossen Luna Pro F in another compartment.

Outside in mesh netting pockets are 5T and 6T close up lenses with a filter stacker cover. A rear lens cap coupled onto a body cap are also in that pocket.

In the other mesh netting pocket are rolls of fresh film.

In the pocket up front are hex keys for the Arca Swiss type QR plate. There's also a microfiber cloth for lens cleaning. The AS-4 F3 to ISO shoe adapter, and a double bubble level. Finally, a Nikon cable release and a spare set of batteries for the camera or databack.

My other Lowepro Lumina bag carries a similar kit with an FG and its motor drive.

This may sound like a lot, but many of these items are small parts which disappear into the bag.

Elliot :), well said!

John Carter-Rhodes , Jul 27, 2004; 11:14 a.m.

Hmmm...Elliot, what did you expect from this particular thread? Personally, I just put exactly what I had in my bag. What anyone else might do is up to them. Why do you have a problem with it?

I'd have thought it's an interesting idea to see what people take with them, especially if they were to post what subjects they were interested in at the same time (which might be a good idea, I'm mostly doing street photography at the moment).

Of course, if you just drop in and don't contribute....as is your wont....then you'll always get the wrong impression. ;)

John.

Oops. Sorry Elliot. I missed your first post....but that doesn't mean that people don't take their whole collection with them. *hugs*

Richard Milner , Jul 27, 2004; 11:42 a.m.

These days if I shoot 35mm I take one lens. Last Sunday I went out with the FM and 105mm AIS, but usually I would opt for a 50mm, 35mm, or 28mm.

In the winter I might take a second lens in a coat pocket.

What usually gets put in the car when I go somewhere: Main case (foam-lined aluminum tool case): Nikon Photomic FTn, 50/2 Nikkor, 35-105 Nikkor, 80-200/4 Nikkor, 20/3.5 Vivitar, 28/2.8 Quantaray, flash, Vivitar 2x teleconverter, Nikon TC14 teleconverter, Vivitar ext. tubeset, plus cable release, couple of filters, diopter lens, etc. Usually accompanied by second FTn body in soft case with room for a couple of lenses, into which I can decant a body and a couple of lenses when walking around. And usually also a Nikkor 400/5.6 ED in its own case. Oh, and of course my Slik 400DX tripod. A monopod also lives semi-permanently in the car, as does "the Konica from Hell," a beat-up T3 with a Sigma zoom, loaded with cheap print film.

In my Tamrac 5606, I carry my F100, AF-D 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 (on the F100 right now), AF-D 18-35 f/3.5-4.5, and my AF Micro-Nikkor 60mm f/2.8D. Also, I have my 52mm red 25A and UV filters (which I should really move to the F3HP or N80, as none of the lenses in there take a 52mm filter; the body caps for the F100 and N80 and rear lens caps for all the lenses. Some Kodak lens cleaning tissue. All the manuals (bodies, lenses, and flashes), warranty cards, and accessory lists that I have received. My Magic Lantern Guide to the F100 is usually in there too. I have some moist lens wipes floating around depending on if I can remember to get them when I run out. I have AA batteries most of the time. I even have the detachable lens blind in its own little compartment.

In my LowePro TLZ1, I carry my N80 and AF-D 50mm f/1.8.

In my Tamrac 602, I carry my F3HP and 50mm f/1.2 AIS (but I generally don't carry the F3 in a bag. It can take it.)

Also, my SB-50DX goes generally with the F100, but always where I need it most.

I also have a big sack somewhere with all the original packaging, but I don't think that matters.

D70, F100, 20/2.8, 35/2, 50/1.4, 105/2, 180/2.8, most often these days.

Jim MacKenzie , Jul 27, 2004; 05:53 p.m.

AF bag (LowePro Compact AW): F100/MB15, F90/MF26; SB28DX; 20-35/2.8D, 28-105/2.8D LD (Tamron), 80-200/2.8 ED, 75-300/4.5-5.6, 50/1.4D, 105/4 Micro (AI'd); hoods for all the lenses; 77mm polarizer, yellow, red, 81C; 62-77 ring; 62mm yellow, red; 52mm polarizer, yellow, red, 81C; compact scissors; changing bag; SC-17 flash cable; tripod mounting plates.

MF bag (LowePro Nova 4): FM2n/MD-12, Nikkormat FT3; SB22; 16/2.8 fisheye, 28/2.8E, 35-80/4-5.6D, 50/1.8E, 55/3.5 Micro, 80-200/4.5; 52mm polarizer, yellow, red, 81C; 39mm bayonet yellow, red filters for the fisheye lens stored in a flash card case :); tripod mounting plates.

My preferred system is the AF one for obvious reasons - it can do just about anything - but because it's big and heavy, I use the manual bag more than one would think. The manual system is lightweight enough that one can hike with it, even though it's in a shoulder bag.

Sometimes I'll move lenses around a bit (the fisheye into the AF bag, the 50/1.4D into the manual bag), depending on what I plan on doing.

Yesterday : only my just cleaned and refoamed $35.00 Nikkormat EL, two rols of Fuji Superia 200 and my 'new' 105/2.5 non-AI lens with L1BC filter. In fact I didn't bother to take the camera bag with me at all. Man oh man, did this lens get me klickin' - I burnt the two rolls of film in no time at all. You just can feel that this lens is sharp, just by looking through it and the focal lenght felt sooo right! It's a pitty the focusing throw is a little on the long side. Today : nothing. Tomorrow : probably the FM2n for a change, with the 24/2.8 AIS + its shade and the 180/2.8 AI (non-ED). A couple of rolls of film, dust blower and the Domke F3X bag. Now don't think that I'm shooting every other day (it's more like every other month for me), but I'm on holiday right now ;-)

mmm, some guys seem to carry a whole store...

I'm fine with a F90x/N90s (no backup so the choice is simple), a 24mm, a 50mm, an 80-200mm and loads of Tri-x and NPH. Sometimes I bring a sekonic lightmeter/spotmeter, and a couple of filters.

Ray - , Jul 27, 2004; 09:20 p.m.

i agree, some pretty strong athletes out there. for over, when i travel overseas, i carry a travel pack with 6kg max that is one spare set of clothing, one sweater/thin water jacket/gloves/wolly hat if colder i take a goretex and fleece rather than the thin jacket. i buy one set of clothing abroad. swiss knife, compass, guide book (lonely planet), no spare shoes, no formals, no sleeping bag, travel size toiletries. when i do buy some more gear, my ideal is D70, 50 and 20 prime and be done. if i go to national parks i use a lightweight 80-200/4.5-5.6 D as used by Galen Rowell. no day-bag ... one pol filter. maybe a plastic shopping bag when it rains to bag my camera. gitzo weekender only when essential. dragging so much gear does not look pretty in the train, the bus or the cafe :-~

Jeff Spirer , Jul 27, 2004; 10:33 p.m.

I carry business cards and a small book of prints to show people what I do. When I'm in countries where English, French or Spanish aren't spoken, I carry a letter of introduction in the local language. I carry a pen and a small book for people to write their names and addresses in so I can send prints. Everything else varies from day to day and really doesn't matter as long as I'm getting the photos I need.

Akira Sasaki , Jul 28, 2004; 12:29 a.m.

Everyday when going to work:

N70 + 35/2 AFD + SB29 1 roll of each: Velvia, Astia, Provia 400

When going somewhere more interesting:

N70 + 17-35/2.8AFS + 85/1.4 AFD + SB29 Various films.

All in a Domke F803.

Jason Everitt , Jul 28, 2004; 12:45 a.m.

Canikon D123 (4.0 yottapixels) with 6-1200mm f1.0 L DO IS USM, a 20X teleconverter, a 0.001 mm fisheye with a 360 angle of view, a super- lightweight ultra-sturdy tripod made of materials that only Geordi La Forge talks about. Two 50 Terabyte compact flash cards. A Gossekonic Digisix-six- six light meter that is able to detect light in a black hole and can detect from radio to comic radiation and has a 0.0001 degree spot meter.

I also carry a Holga and a bottle of water.

Jason Everitt , Jul 28, 2004; 12:46 a.m.

BTW, all carried in a bright neon yellow fanny pack.

Jean-Baptiste Queru , Jul 28, 2004; 01:06 a.m.

In my basic bag (Tamrac Velocity 7): Canon 10D, 17-40/4L, 50/1.4, 70-200/4L (that's the "regular basis", though there are plenty of other combos, I just have too much gear).

Michael Benveniste , Jul 28, 2004; 10:08 a.m.

Today? An unloaded F100, my 24-120 and 70-300 Nikkors, a 200mm f/4 for a Pentax 645, a Cullman Flash with Nikon and Pentax SCA modules, and various, uh, stuff, such as lens cleaning pens, cable releases, etc.

A week ago, none of the above lenses were in the bag. Neither was the flash. Said bag is sitting in a spare bedroom. What do I have with me? A Pronea S and an IX 30-60mm.

Gary Loo , Jul 28, 2004; 11:56 a.m.

Only what I need to shoot with for the day.

Carl Stone , Jul 28, 2004; 12:17 p.m.

"Gary Loo , jul 28, 2004; 11:56 a.m. Only what I need to shoot with for the day."

Now there is someone that has it nailed, I never know what I'm going to need, so I wind up taking a lot of stuff that I don't actually use. Of course with me, that is applicable to more sitautions that just photography, when I go on vacation, there is no spare room in my vehicle. How else does one deal with the fear that you may need something and not have it handy? :o)

Dominic . , Jul 29, 2004; 01:26 a.m.

F3HP, 50mm (that one gets used a lot, if not solely), 24mm (on occasion), 70-300 (almost never gets used except for nature work). Loads of film, yellow, red, blue, and warming filters (although I usually use just the yellow if any).

Water bottle.

joe zammarelli , Jul 29, 2004; 01:08 p.m.

This morning, EM, 80-200mm macro, monopod, four rolls of film.

Yesterday, FM2n, 28mm, monopod, flash, four rolls of film.

It really depends on what I expect to shoot, but, this may sound boring, most days I carry either camera and a 50mm lens. Oh, and four rolls of film.

p.s. I never carry a bag. Well, rarely.
