When I try to alter one of my pictures using Nikon Picture Project,
I get an error message saying "Editing disabled, pic001.jpg is
locked"
Does anyone know the cause or solution to this problem?

Could be that the file has become locked somehow. I had a similar problem once. I use a
Mac, so was able to correct the issue by selecting the offending file, hitting Command-I to
get info, and then deselecting the "Lock" checkbox in the file info dialog.
If you use Windows, there's probably somethig similar. I don't know the procedure though.
Hope this might help you.

Files are always write-protected or "locked" in a CD, or if transferred from a CD to a hard drive. They are also locked if the file is in use by another program. To change the "write protected" attribute, right-click on the file name and open "properties". Then de-select the "write protected" box.

Picture Project is one of the lousiest piece of software one can imagine. My advice for
using is: don't.
Nikon = great cameras and lenses, crappy software.

Yeh, but Capture gives you lots of time to enjoy how inept it is.
