Gold Ring

I've noticed some Nikon lenses have a gold ring and some do not. What does the gold ring signify?

The gold ring means that Nikon ED glass is used, extra low dispersion glass.

I was always under the impression that the gold ring indicated the 'pro glass' series...(whatever that means, other than 'even greater optics than usual but at an even higher price!) e.g. the 18-200VR has ED glass too, but no gold ring.

My 18-200 is an ED lens, but has no gold ring. I shot my friend's 80-400 and is an ED and it has a gold ring.

The gold ring seems kind of random these days, but for awhile it did designate a fast, pro lens.

I thought the Gold ring meant the lens was of Nikon's highest quality, similar to Canon's L series.

So all those Nikkor primes that I own are not professional quality lenses? :-)
