Wow, what a nice upgrade... Nikon 50mm/f1.8 -> f1.4

Wade Thompson , Nov 20, 2009; 02:03 p.m.

Just upgraded my 50mm from a f1.8 to a f1.4.
The difference in quality is amazing. I know the difference in aperture theoretically... but when you put the two lenses side by side, it really hits home how much more light comes in (2/3 stops).
Yowza!
Now... if only Santa will bring me a 85mm f1.4 I'll be in business.

Yep, that is a totally different lens. The 85mm 1.4 is even better, but so expensive.
I use the 85mm 1.8. It's not as good as the 50mm 1.4, a bit softer. But it surely is better than the 50mm 1.8.

Try It. You will know if you`re still recoverable.

If you find yourself wondering if you have NAS, it's already too late. Just stop eating out. And a pair of shoes should last four years, anyway. And why spend all of that money on life insurance? You can't enjoy your lenses when you're dead, anyway.

Welcome to the land of fast primes, Wade. It really does change what and how you shoot. And it really gets you thinking about what you're going to get into that sliver of depth of field. Have fun!

"but when you put the two lenses side by side, it really hits home how much more light comes in (2/3 stops)."
OK, Wade - why should this be so? For a given exposure, the same amount of light is available, if not via aperture, then by time.

I bought a new f/1.8 and it is a great lens. I used to have a f/1.2 (actually several) and they were too soft wide open for my liking. Recently a f/1.4 fell off of fleabay onto my Nikon and I too am very impressed with the quality wide open. Bokeh is nice too, though I'm finding a few instances where it can be a bit rough.

Shot from my new/old 50mm f/1.4 AIS.

Dave, you know what I mean..... I'll use it for indoor fast action sports...
