Small and light weight: Sigma 24-50

Jörg Vetter , Nov 20, 2009; 03:50 p.m.

Dear all, just a hobby: permanently I am looking for lenses: optical performance/(size*weight) is maximized for my D300. Now I found the Sigma 24-50 UC. Not a fast lens, but wondering how good the resolution is. I made a test against newest Nikkor 16-85 VR at 5.6. See http://joergvetter.oyla.de/cgi-bin/hpm_homepage.cgi . Ghost/flare resistance seems to be acceptable (A 5.6). The AF is quite fast. Does anybody has a manual or test reports from that lens? Any other advice for "minimized" lenses for D300 ? Thanks BR Joerg

hello jorg, would you happen to know the weight of that sigma? if it's size is any indication, it may be a lens i'd like to take hiking. i can't seem to find any specs on online.

Jonathan, 360 g only, length 51mm, diameter 69 mm. A shot is shown in the folder: Kleinstes zoom- smallest zoom http://joergvetter.oyla.de/cgi-bin/hpm_homepage.cgi also a link, the only one which I found.

thanks! do you have any idea how it would compare with a Nikon 18-55? that one comes in at around 260g.

sorry, i meant to ask how the results compare as far as image quality.

Ok, If I have time I will prepare a short comparision with the 18-55 VR -only 260 g, but it has only a plastic bajonet! MF is also difficult to handle.

Great result for the small oldy: Sigma 24-50 UC against the Nikon 18-55 VR. Weak length is the short end, but the 35 mm and 50mm are realy great for that lens, see: http://joergvetter.oyla.de/cgi-bin/hpm_homepage.cgi
