D300 Raw colour issues

stephen lilley , Nov 20, 2009; 04:25 p.m.

Hi, I recently upgraded to a D300 from a D200, I always shoot raw. I am finding that my raw conversion in both photoshop elements and NX2 is unatural, ie not the colours I remember at the time I took the shot.Usually I can achieve a satisfactory result by adjusting the "tint" slider in the raw conversion for elements, but should I have to do this everytime.. I have reset my D300 to factory settings , no improvement. I did not have this issue with my D200, the sensor seems so different on the D300.By the way the colours on my D300 LCD look spot on, the colours in the NX2 browser look okay also. I have checked white balance, saturation etc but have not come up with an answer. Somewhat confused Stephen

Stephen, What you see in the LCD or in the browser is the processed jpeg with all the settings you selected. Besides White balance other settings that could affect the image are the color space and the picture control.
Usually NX2 should apply this settings to your RAW and it should look like the image in the browser or LCD, unless you configured your NX2 not to do it.
Another thing to check is that you have the picture controls installed in NX2. I think that some of them you have to do manually (at least you ad to do in NX) These are the D2X modes and the Landscape and portrait

The image displayed in View NX or Capture NX2 should look very similar to the image in you camera's LCD screen. If it doesn't, your computer monitor may need to be calibrated.

Photoshop and other editing software is not going to convert the raw image as accurately as Capture NX 2 or View NX. You almost always have to tweak the contrast, saturation, and other controls.

For PSE in RAW, your camera settings do not matter. Maybe you changed the defaults for the ACR converter? Of course, the D300 might render colors a little different. Just save your nwe settings as default. In ACR for PS, there is a little triangle which allows you to save the defaults. Should be similar in your PSE.

Stephen - the colors out of the D300 compared to the D200 are very different in the RAW shots. One of the first things I noticed when I got mine. Why don't you make one of your RAW files available & see what we can do to help you.

Well I have been trying to do this for 2 days. The instructions from the nikonsupport are basically download, click and follow on screen instructions. No matter what I do I can not get nx2 to recognise the .NOP files. I can install in camera without problem. I can copy to and from card, but I cannot get NX2 to recognise that they are there. Any help would be appreciated .
Thank You

Mark,
For the Landscape and Portrait picture controls you need to use the following files (available from nikonusa.com) for capture NX, NX2 or View NX
Portrait: S-OPCPT_-100WF-ALLIN.exe
Landscape: S-OPCLS_-100WF-ALLIN.exe
I don´t remember how I installed the D2X modes, I think you have to use the picture control utility

Yeah thanks Francisco. I have been trying to install those files, but all they do is open capture NX2 and dont install. If I try to get to them from my camera or storage card then they are not recognised. Any other ideas?
Thanks for trying to elp

I would ask a question to Nikon support . Maybe there is a conflict with your specific configuration.

steven - whenever I got a new digital camera I had a terrible struggle for best RAW conversion lasting quite a few hundred shots and many hours at the PC :-) Nikon seems to develop different taste for color with every new major camera ^^.

Unfortunately the settings also change in Adobe PS and other software that uses the same plugin for RAW conversion with updates of their profiles.

If you are experienced with software you could get a shortcut to better colors using homemade "profiles" using the editor software for profiles that Adobe provides. You would need the simpler version of Gretag color checker and take a few shots of it in several typical light situations.

At some point you might need to read up on the RAW conversion e.g. here:
