Thinking of buying a used D700

phil cuddy , Jan 30, 2012; 08:39 p.m.

Found a (very) well used d700 (300k actuations). The local shop will part exchange for my d300s (mint) + 35mm 1.8 +£40.
BTW shop's got good rep, and offers 6 months guarantee with the d700.
Seriously thinking about it.

ps my only lenses are:

  • tamron 17-50vc (dx)
  • sigma 105 macro
  • nikon 35mm 1.8 (dx)

My problem will be that the sigma will be my only lens until i part ex the tamron (prob for a 50mm 1.4)

Unless you will get the lens(es) for the D700, it is not clear to me what you gain by exchanging your D300s for that D700. What are you unhappy about your D300s?

I was going to ask a similar question: Is your D300S not getting its job done. That D700 is well used/abused. Most likely the shutter is due for replacement, and that will cost say 300 Pounds or so. And you will need additional lenses.

Given that the D700 is already officially discontinued and a replacement should be due, I think you are better off waiting a bit until more used D700 come onto the used market as people upgrade. I would buy one that is in better condition.

i do use high iso's a lot. also the lenses i plan on purchasing for my d300 are fx lenses, so i will not be getting any size benefits by keeping the d300.
lenses i plan on getting in the future
24-85 3.5-4.5 (gets some good reviews, and is wider than my 17-50 which i would like).
50 1.4
85 1.8
a wide zoom, not sure which one yet.

That's a lot of shots on that D700.

Well, if I were you, I would save up the money to get the lenses first. And I would not touch this particular D700 for the exact reason Shun mentioned. 300K is a lot of clicks.

My guess is it belonged to a wedding photographer, perhaps. What about finding a used/refurb D7000? You already have lenses for that, and it has more res and excellent high ISO performance. That would leave you with plenty of money to upgrade a lens, too.

i think they are ex press as there have been a number similar turning up on ebay. the sudden opportunity of being able to get a d700 has gone to my head, it is very used, and for an extra 200 or so a good copy could be found. nas is bad!

Phil,

hi - 300K - wow, I'd be v.happy if my D700 lasted that long (currently up to around 40k after nearly 3 years). It is a stellar performer, esp. for indoor sports and while I have lusted after a D3S for some time to gain an extra ISO stop (and now a D4 for yet another ISO stop), I just cannot afford that amount of ££££.
So yesterday I picked up what I think is a real bargain - a D200 with 6591 actuations, a battery grip and 3 genuine nikon batteries, charger, strap, cables etc etc included - all for £345...not really gonna hack it as a 2nd body for indoor sports excepting where I can get away with ISO 400 or less (not very much then), but the batteries will be good spares for the D700 and it will be handy for outdoor events, studio work, areas where I would want to take a camera but perhaps leave the more expensive gear at home
Forget that D700 - save up for a less used one if you want one, and enjoy the experience.

Bad deal, in my view. A D300s of which you know the full story, versus a D700 of which you only know it is used heavily - and you have to give up one of your nicest lenses plus throw in some money? I wouldn't.
Given the fact you have just one FX lens for now, I would start first with getting the FX lenses you want, and then getting the FX body. The other way around seems a little limiting, unless you are fine to have 5MP photos of the D700 DX mode for quite a while with your DX lenses.

And your lens plan does not make too much sense to me. You currently have a really nice f/2.8 zoom, and will next get a slower lens? Sure, the AF-S 24-85 you want gets good reviews, but it's not available new (so another gamble there), and it's not likely better than your tamron. Plus you lose ~1 stop...so you're wasting part of the high ISO advantage of the D700 already there.
