Video settings on the D800

Ian Rance , Feb 08, 2012; 05:03 a.m.

As an owner of a D7000 I have actually found the video mode very useful for my electronics and mechanical analysis - where I film a part in action and then using a manual focus lens apply the limited depth of field available to isolate what I am speaking about and demonstrating. Along with most here I am at least pleased to read about the new D800 but looking at the online specs it looks like something is missing - namely the 640 × 424 (25p); 25 fps video rate of the D7000. Is this an oversight and it is there or has it been removed?

I use this exlusively to make DVD's and upload content, and it would be a shame if one of the most useful things in the D7000 was not applied in the new model.

I suspect that when you are paying this price for the camera that has this many pixels, they probably just assume you aren't planning on doing output that is intended for youtube videos... I'm sure if you wanted to you could use some software like Vegas to downsize your video...
Honestly if you only need 640 x 424 video, I wouldn't spend 3 grand for this camera... it would be a bit like buying a F1 car so your grandma could drive to church each Sunday.

True Tom, but having got used to the quality and ease of handling of 640 x 424 I would miss it. On one occasion I had 10 minutes to film a short demonstration and put it on YouTube as a private tutorial. The light was poor and subject difficult to film but the D7000 did well. If I had to start using a video editor then I would miss my deadlines. I did try the 720 option but it just stalled my computer completely (made it over-work).

Maybe take the money that you'd spend on a D800 and buy a faster computer...?

When I first bought a d200 back in 2006 I missed the ability to take a 640x480 photograph. Just something that could be reasonably emailed right out of the computer. Software is the answer of course, but it is an extra step.
PH makes a good point, each new camera requires a new computer to keep up to it. Again, when I first bought a d200 my computer at that time took about 8 seconds to display each photo.
